Success on council Aires in Scotland

Interesting arguments about the economics of this whole issue - "we bring revenue to the area" is a common one and undoubtedly must have a grain of truth assuming that people do actually get out and go an eat/drink/shop locally rather than sit all day admiring the view and watching TV.

That said, I am not sure how this value can be calculated. A Moho with two occupants filling a parking space for a day denies that space to vehicles that could be carrying four or five people - people who might otherwise make up important passing trade to the locality. Not an easy equation to work out methinks . . . . . .
Most car parks where aires are situated are large enough to accommodate both cars and vans, never full. Hawick for example has 400 car spaces and the car park has just been extended at the bottom for motorhome use. Nearby Jedburgh has 3 car parks in town and these are never all full at the same time. As Pugsy said we hand in our receipts wherever we go. Usually send a thankyou email to the towns as well attaching email receipts. If most people do this it helps towns see how much they can benefit.

Definitely not because you example could be flipped and there could be one person in the car and four/five in the M/H?

Well done, looks excellent.

Good luck!

Exactly. That's what makes it a complex equation. Even if there was only one person per car, you could have several cars come and go from the same parking space. I guess what I am saying is that you cannot simply say that motorhomes add or detract from local economies. What you can say is that they (or most of them at least) make a contribution.

Most car parks where aires are situated are large enough to accommodate both cars and vans, never full. Good point well made. I'm guilty of thinking in terms of the often overcrowded parking facilities in popular places south of the border. Where the tourists outnumber the locals (providing you don't count sheep or deer as locals) anyone travelling to and parking somewhere and then spending money locally is going to add value.

I have a feeling that car parks that are already full of cars won't be putting aside spaces for motorhome so by default they are just utilising spare capacity.

This looks a lovely stop and we will be sure to stop by next time we are up your way. I would be happy to pay £5.

IMO you've priced it perfectly with no elsan point. (y)(y) All too many new stopovers asking £10 and not even as much as fresh water wont be getting my business. I wish you lots of success, you deserve it.

The problem with 'just any old place to park and charge them £10 a pop' Councils, is they will want a million fold return, for the bucket of tarmac that they have just used to make the parking spots, in a timescale of months, rather than years. Plus the places will be over run, by hooligans banging on the vans. This is Britain!

Thank you. When we do have a black waste disposal, and it’s coming soon, we will only charge for what you use, so overnight without waste will stay as £5. Use of waste will be a separate service charge of £5, and will be available for people not wishing to stay too. 😊

Call me cynical but I don't think councils will be too bothered about how much we spend locally so long as they make a profit on their Aires.

There seems to be huge amount of enthusiasm to create space for motorhomes recently which is brilliant news, something us long termers have wanted for years. Let's just hope that those recently into it keep the momentum going long enough to keep the Councils interested and create more and more places then as the package holidays open back up and they loose interest us genuine motorhomers shall reap the benefit :)

The one in Ayr was not set up correctly they should have blocked off the other half of the car park to stop the boy racers , signage wasn't right either hopefully they will get it right this year , as to the rest of Scotland aired type parkin introduced throughout the highlands already have one at the falls of shin , Aviemore mountain is also opening up one , there's one at Strathpepper , Skye council are also opening up some this year , so hats off to them let's hope we use them and more will open up .
