I want to use my motorhome in Spain through the winter and fly home from time to time , any advice on storage and insurance would be much appreciated .

we used airport secure parking near Alicante - only for ten days but it felt very safe and secure - I will see if I can look up the details as it was a while ago

You're not insured, with most policies, after 48hrs of being away from the Motorhome whilst using it.

We take the calculated risk and have parked on sites and flown from Alicante to UK for as long as 20 days over this last Christmas.

This year we were booked into Chris parking near Alicante Airport, they have indoor storage which we booked. We didn’t make it there so left it at Allania Costa Blanca site..

Not quite true the 48 hours applies if you don't inform them. If you inform them and they are happy with the storeage they will extend the period but may charge.

Yes you’re correct and I was informing them when I had the vehicle in a garage in the UK. However, I’m not sure that non Gokd Standard CASOA continental storage in a parking facility near an airport, is going to be something they are happy to cover. I’m with Comfort Insurance and rather they didn’t know! My risk, but I understand that!

We did it for two winters 2018/19 and 2019/20, until the pandemic and lockdown.

We drove from the UK to Alicante and based the van there indoors at Chris Parking for 6 months (paid €400 euro at the time, which included shuttle service to and from the airport five minutes away).

Flying backwards and forwards, we were doing roughly 2 weeks in Spain and 2 weeks in the UK throughout the winter - it worked an absolute dream. We live very close to Bristol airport and it became like catching the bus. Only required absolute minimum hand luggage, because clothes and stuff were in the van.

You are allowed to keep a UK-registered van in Spain for up to 6 months in any 12. And our to-and-fro trips ensured we met the Schengen requirements too (90 days in 180 rolling calendar), even though Br***t and enforcement was delayed and didn't happen until 2021.

So, yes the real difficulty was finding an insurer to provide cover for what we wanted to do. I nearly lost the will to live ringing all of them and every one saying it couldn't be done. But eventually, I found a broker who said they thought they could help - and they did! And although I haven't done it since 2020, I still have cover for up to 6 months a year at Chris Parking - coming and going whenever we want. The broker had to make a special agreement for me with the senior underwriter in the UK.

The broker is Advance Insurance, based in Wiltshire.

The underwriter is Ageas:

As said, the whole arrangement worked really well and the service from Chris Parking was great - we just let them know in advance when we were arriving, then ring from Alicante airport when we got there and their minibus turned up in minutes. Chris would plug in the van to condition the batteries if we wanted, though often wasn't necessary as they were fine for a couple of weeks. (y)

I would think so, UK insurers appear to act differently to every other country.
I know with the 3 cars I have insured in Spain.

They don't ask where it is stored at night, day, penalty points. I just insure the vehicle for any driver 25-75

Many years ago (25?) we left a caravan on a campsite in Greece. We took out local insurance with a Greek insurer.
