Anyone recommend a stiff brush to clean off the bbq grill plate whilst on site with no washing up facilities?
Even Lenny HB came over at the Stratford upon Avon meet tonight and said how filthy it was!
It's a Lotus look alike.

You can buy a kit from B&M/Wilko etc. that comprises a large plastic bag and liquid that does wonders for neglected oven trays, BBQ trays etc.
Pop the item in the bag, pour in the liquid and seal overnight.
Mrs Emmit buys them regularly

And then when clean, consider bbq mats.. a kevlar tyoe material the keeps bbq clean as you cook directly on it... cleans easily after in soapy water... Cadac make their own which I use and it keeps bbq clean...

That looks like it's up to the job. Does the brush then get caked in crud though, in which case how do you clean the brush?
soda crystals if required but I find a good load of fairy liquid does good enough

Lidl do a range of BBQ products at very reasonable prices.

I did think that, we've got those mats for the gas cadac but maybe not for a charcoal bbq?
Presume you wouldn't get the smoky flavour that you're trying to achieve?

True, best for gas... charcoal gets hot enough to burn it all off... gas is convenient, the mats make it Very convenient...

I assume that's nasty chemicals, which maybe okay at home but how do you clean it off whilst on site camping with only a communal fresh water tap?

Good point.
However the contents are drain acceptable.

I use an industrial wire brush too, just give it a stiff going over while the grill is still hot to get off any burned on bits.
I haven't washed my gas grill grate in over two years, it's nicely seasoned.

It works a treat. Let the BBQ roast the grill then scrub the hot grill with it to dislodge any carbonised bits onto the coals / gas.
Been using them for years on our house weber gas BBQ.
Maybe lasts a couple of years with regular use. I use it after every BBQ to clean the cast iron grill. And we BBQ year round, maybe twice a week... More at present

Try a good burn out and cover with oil to soften and wipe with kitchen paper... DO NOT clean in hot soapy water. Will only compound problems in future..
Sure you be successful.
But we never never never wash any nonstick/ cast iron appliances in hot water and detergent.
Heat pan, apply oil until smoking and wipe with paper towel... May take more than one attempt.
We have 2 old Tefal non stick frying pans that were destined to the bin when we got a cast iron wok with instructions to season the wok..
So I thought why not... so our old frying pan is now back in action.. totally non stick... Never gets washed.. Good wipe out with kitchen roll while still warm..
Incidently, all our oven trays get same treatment..
Hope this helps.
PS to note...
All these wire brushes above will clean your grill...BUT they will also strip any non stick functions that the washing up liquids have not already taken care off..
Maintain your non stick qualities and you will not need to resort to medieval cleaning methods..

Ordered THIS from Amazon to collect from a locker up the road at the Shell garage.
Looks the same and is only £3.75 delivered.

Oki doki..
This is my 3yr old Cadac pretend BBQ plate.... never seen a wire brush or any sort of brush and no hot soapy water...
Just oil and kitchen paper...
And I wonder how so many say Cadacs are the devil to clean?...
It ain't the Cadac..... its the incompetent cleaners.👍

When I can find it I also use a wire brush after heating the grill up to a high temp, all the crud usually falls off, then re-season with clean cooking oil.
I also have a large black plastic box at home, which I fill with Soda Crystals & hot water, its big enough to take all the shelves, baking trays from the home oven, plus any BBQ bits easily, just leave to soak, then wire wool to finish off.
A mate of mine cleans all his Weber BBQ and oven stuff every time he power washes his drive, he swears by this method, but I always forget, especially once I have fully soaked my jeans & shoes with wet crud from the drive.
