We are planning a different trip this year. We have spent a lot of time travelling in France and are very comfortable there. However this year we are ringing the changes and travelling in Germany and Bohemia, hopefully Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. We are going from mid May for 6 weeks which doesn't help as the last two weeks of May I think are German holidays!

We prefer to stay in a location for 4 to 6 days and cycle the area and hence usually stay on campsites. This is not a problem in France as there are hundreds of campsites. We stay in Aires in France but generally only overnight when travelling.

I get the impression that Stellplatzs in Germany are a bit more sophisticated than most French Aires but would welcome any Funster’s experience of them I.e. is it acceptable and appropriate to stay in a Stellpaltz longer than a day or two? Do/can you book or just "rock up"? What sort of facilities do they have or is that question a “how long is a piece of string”!

Also any advice on the best app for use in Germany. (I am finding Searchforsites seems to spend ages loading markers!)

Thanks in anticipation!

Stellaplatz are very similar to French Aires, anything from just an area in a car park to some like the better French Aires.

We’re currently in Germany, mixing Stellplaetze and ACSI sites. There are Stellplaetze virtually everywhere, and as OP seems to anticipate they vary very widely. Certainly free ones may limit stays to a day or 2, paying ones less so.The other night we were on a council one in Wittenberg - €5 a night, €1 for 8 hours electricity. We did wince at the prices of some on the Ostsee (Baltic) coast - some over €30 plus electric- and in that region very very few free ones.

Personally I don’t like S4S at all, and find Campercontact works well in Germany (even though some of the reviews are amazingly pernickety!). But it‘s also well worth buying the Bordatlas - handy maps.

Yes I have the BordAtlas but never used them in anger. We also use ACSI but most site are excluded when we are going to be there due to the holidays. Sttill has to be cheaper than UK!

Bordatlas is our recommendation, we like to see the pictures to select our next stellplatz.
We tried the French Aires once and “never again” it didn’t suit us!
However Stellplatz are imo much nicer and better. As someone once told me “ Aires are French and Stellplatz are German, there IS a difference”! Since then we have never gone back to the French Aires!
The Moselle is great, we are off there next week!
We prefer to pay a few Euros for the better ones, my view is anything for nothing is often worth nothing!
We are not the usual “must do our holiday as cheap as possible” type motorhomers, but each to their own!

We can only highly recommend Germany and the Stellplatz system.

You’ll be even more comfortable in germany there’s 6800+ stellplatze 150 are top platze these are chosen by motorhomes voting in the promobil magazine almost every town and village has one ,the majority of Germans speak good English and if you have a mechanical problem you will find someone who will be glad to help. There’s also atop plate book available at site very handy.

I vote stellplatz. Not sure there is a time limit. Most won't let you book for fewer than 2 nights.
Th ones by Spas (Bad) are excellent.

There are a lot of ideas over on the German page. See the link below.

Germany is the top country for Motorhome stops. I use Bordatlas. Many are free (Kostenlos) and some are free if you reciprocate (buy a drink there, meal etc.) Many are city/town centre and there are some quite beautiful ones in gardens, restaurants etc. Austria is the same.
There are two versions of Bordatlas, a large one for Germany and a smaller one for everywhere else.

You should also think about traveling down through Luxembourg before heading into Germany. There are some lovely Camper stops and of course cheap fuel.
One of our favorites is Vianden which we will be going back to in August.
I use Search for sites all the time and don't have any issues with it. Have you paid for the app on your phone?

Incidentally, I've just noticed you are from Edinburgh I'm not far from you.

Chris Laing yes had a paid subscription last year for SforS. We are crossing to Rotterdam so giving Luxembourg a miss this year.

And Diekirch is really nice. OK it's a campsite, but on the river in town.
