There are lots of posts about failed starter batteries. Yesterday, a friend of mine had his starter battery replaced by the RAC. It cost him £270 for a battery he could probably have got for £140 if he was at home.

As my friend discovered, measuring the voltage of a starter battery isn’t a reliable indicator of its state of health. His motorhome started fine in the morning but then refused to start after he stopped for a coffee break a couple of hours later.

There are quite a few starter battery load testers available on Amazon and elsewhere. Has anyone tried one of these? Do they work? Any recommendations?

Yes, I have a Ring battery analyser that provides an idea of the remaining battery life (based on measuring internal resistance I believe) and also tests alternator and some other things I can’t recall. I bought if after a similar battery failure and RAC replacement. I now use it at least once per year on Motorhome and car and have used it to replace batteries ahead of them letting me down.

No point in telling you which model I have, as their range is now different and the one I have is no longer sold.
