Hi, I am worried about my gearbox, a few weeks ago we were in France on the motorway doing 100KPH when it changed from auto to manual !!!
all the lights on dash came up and speedo stopped working, pulled into a service area turned off engine, started engine drove up and down the road would only give me 1st then 3 and 6 so I thought we may as well get back on our way, it stayed in manual for around 70k's, we came off motorway as nearing our next stop over, turned off the engine as was wondering how I am going to move in traffic with a possessed gearbox, started up again and OH now we are an auto again, any ideas ??

Have you had the fluids changed as per your service schedule?

I can’t remember years/miles but it’s in your book.

Sounds like a glitch, might be worth pulling the main fuse for a reset, I’ve never done this but possibly someone else on here has 🤷‍♂️

Hi , its going into Mercedes to have the ECU checked, they said the gearbox is a sealed unit, will find out today, thanks for your comments

I would agree with transmission fluid, low or well used oil in the autobox can cause a variety of issues. Been there.

Don’t know where you are, but we have a Frankia on a Sprinter 416 with Sprintshift. We’ve had 2 problems that have resulted in ‘limp home mode’. The first required a replacement turbocharger (sticking vanes) and the second was due to an internal fault with the abs controller. Our local commercial vehicle garage dealt with both faulfs, reading out the codes etc. John knows older sprinters and Sprintshift very well. He’s based in Nailsea, not far from Bristol. If you want to contact him, his number is 01275 853939.

Forgot to add, the reason the speedo stopped working on ours was no communication from yhe abs controller. Replacement abs controller was only available from MB - Bosch no longer supply the retail trade for this item. Fortunately, the abs pump was ok. I tried many ECU repairers; most wouldn’t touch it. One that did look at it returned the controller as unrepairable.

Greetings,
I have a hymer on the merc sprintshift. I had problems with the auto gear change a few years ago.
The solution being that the sender on the rear wheel wasn't giving the correct speed info to the gear box. Very easily fixed with a new sender fitted which was about £70.
The only expensive bit being that the old sender had rusted on and was difficult to remove. Total bill about £400.
Maybe worth looking at.
Fixed by a merc commercial dealer in Hereford , the fitter just plugged in a computer which told him exactly what was wrong.
