I’m a newbie
Hi everyone ☺ I know this subject has probably been covered before but I can't find the thread. My problem is this iwould like to fit a sterling 30 amp b2b 1230 in my van using 16m cables as recommended on many YouTube channels. What they don't show you is what do you do with the original split charge system . MINE is in a06 fiat ducato motorhome charger type EVS38/20-DS/IU. Do I just disconnect the live to the battery from it ? Answers please in layman's terms please as I am no spark'y . Thank's to all in anticipation happy Christmas and happy travels for the NEW YEAR.

The answer is, yes there will be a way to disable the split charge relay, but there's many different setups so you'll need give more information about your system. On some setups you can just disconnect the feed from the starter battery, often by just pulling out a fuse. The complicating factor is that the wire from the starter battery to the distribution box sometimes is sometimes used for more than one purpose - for the fridge supply or charging the starter battery for example - but there's always a workaround.

Thank you autoroute unfortunately I don't know what information to suppy to you . Can I just remove the live from split charge wire in b2b and see what if anything in the habitation area is not working . Am I right in saying the new b2b (sterling 30amp 1230 will take care of starter battery charging plus the alternator many thank's

What model of lunar van is it and how old?

The B2b is for charging the hab batteries not the starter battery which is charged from the alternator. You can’t just assume 16mm2 cables will be correct as it depends where you are siting the unit. Have a look on 12volt Planet and they have a volt drop chart.

The B2B is a battery charger powered by the alternator. It only charges the leisure battery. It will have a method for ensuring it only switches on when the engine is running and the alternator is supplying power. The alternator charges the starter battery directly, and the leisure battery through the B2B.

The starter battery is permanently connected to the alternator. A bad connection can cause all kinds of electrical problems, so best to never disconnect it. That's why the input to the B2B is always connected to the starter battery, which has a direct connection to the alternator.

Fiat Ducato 2.8 diesel home-car 06 reg if it helps the number on the charging unit state EVS 38/20-DSU/IU . R egarding quote 16m cable start battery to Sterling 30 amp 1230 charger will be close to 2meter's it was something I saw on YouTube. As you can tell I'm no sparky but have done some vehicle electrical work in the past without any disaster's . Have bought all the correct tools and a fitting kit from simply split charge 👌 so thank you again and awaiting your knowledgeable advice before fitting

I think you'll have to disable the original split charge relay, otherwise it will short out the battery to battery charger. In our Elddis van it would probably require the particular PCB relay coil isolating.. But your van will be different, maybe similar though 👍

Depends, my autotrail imala, on a ducatto even though was 2019 at new, didnt have a "smart" alternator. Apparently autotrail ordered some bases withour smarts up until it wasnt possible.
i left mine as was and fitted it, and was getting a regular steady 30amp from b2b and 7 amp (ish) from the alternator at a steady 14.4
I also fitted a simple switch reachable from the drivers seat to turn it off when I wanted.
disabling the relay was a pain as it controlled some functions if the fridge and retractable step.

Unfortunately I don't have detailed information on the Calira EVS38/20-DS/IU. It looks like the supply from the starter battery to the EVS has two functions, the split charge relay and the fridge 12V. If you disconnect the EVS starter battery input, you will disable the split charge relay (which is what you want) and also disable the fridge relay (which is what you don't want).

I'm sure it's possible to disable the split charge relay on the circuit board, but without more information I couldn't tell you exactly how.

The alternative is to
disconnect the starter battery feed to the EVS,
add an extra relay to supply the fridge
connect the starter battery feed to one power contact of the relay
find the fridge wire, disconnect it
add a 15A fuse
connect the fridge wire to the other power contact of the relay.

The relay needs to be triggered by the D+ signal, which is available on one of the wires.

Maybe you need to get someone to do this for you. Alternatively maybe Apuljack Engineering will disable the split charge relay for you, they repair and refurbish units like these.

A big thank's to all of you for your help . Have found a auto electrician who appears to no what he's talking about after showing him your comment's . It's out of my depth tinkering with the old system . So to you all thank's again a wonderful Christmas and happy journeys for the New Year .
