SpIn and it’s lack of rainfall

Last winter in Mercia (2022) was a complete washout… the winter just gone, Jan-Apr 2023 I think I recall one wet night and two wet half days in over 100 days.

I see tonight on BBC that north Catalunya in the French area have just announced water restrictions to start on May 10.

The whole area has struggled with either excess water (storm Gloria) or not enough water going back years and the quantity of water available is something that ordinary people are very concious of - I'm not always sure if that changes their behaviour though.

Across the street from me, a new house was built in 2018 with a large water gathering tank - ostensibly for a temporary swimming pool that was mounted in their garden last year. Filling a domestic swimming pool (a few houses round here have one as standard) is an expensive business as it'll take your water consumption bill to another level.

I predict that a 'Bermuda' situation could well prevail, where people will be obliged to gather rainfall to supply their needs rather than depend on rivers and lakes that can no longer sustain them. I find this example video from youtube very informative:

I don't know these neighbours so haven't asked them if they are thinking of doing this or not!

Southern Spain is likely to turn into desert by the end of the century. Around 10,000 jobs in agriculture will be lost and, I guess, hundreds or thousands more in other industries impacted by a loss of water. Some of these changes will happen very quickly as water from the Tagus stops being diverted to the SE of Spain.

Lack of water and poor crop yields has meant a big jump in vegetable and fruit prices from last year, as an example lowest priced potatoes in Lidl yesterday 1.49 euros, onions much the same

Its probably just as well we dont drink spanish wine then

This is probably be the way to go. Whether it works will be interesting to see.

It will probably work for most domestic and industrial demands but not agriculture. The costs of producing water will be huge; I'm assuming they'll use solar power for much of the energy demands but the installation and up keep will require massive investments so the costs of water will be high. Use of this water for fruit and veg might not be economically viable....

It’s a pity we can’t give them some of ours, torrential rains yesterday and predicted for 2 more days.

is this maybe 'nordstream 3'?? My mum often suggests she could pipe water from her garden in Belfast that would probably irrigate half of Catalunya..
