I have a 54 plate Fiat Ducato Ci Carioca and the speedo has stopped working. I have just had the 5th gear repaired and the specialist had a look at the speedo cogs etc and assures me these are ok. He reckons it could be the transponder but is no expert on this type of job. He says it is electronic so there are no cables. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

Not sure if this would produce a fault code.
The ECU could be read for possible fault codes or just bite the bullet and replace the transponder.

I think this maybe same as the Peugeot Boxer, if it is one of my old vans had same issue, the “cog” for the Speedo drive fits on a “sleeve” inside the housing where the drive shaft fits, I think the N/S one, but could be wrong, long time since I did it.

you will be able to see from under the van, the cog “slips” of the shaft it sits on, from memory there are two lugs that hold the cog onto the shaft, these lose tension and slip off the shaft, hence when the shaft turns the cog does not, consequently Speedo does not work.

On mine it would very intermittently work, but 95% of time it didn’t, it involved pulling the drive shaft and pulling out the cog and fitting new.

It wouldn't just be a fuse would it?

Thanks for the tips as ever guys. I get it back later today so I'll have a wee look.

Yep! On second thoughts, sure about what, MOT failures or Sat-Navs?

that an inoperable Speedo is not an mot failure.

“It is mandatory that the speedometer is working correctly and gives an accurate reading. Your view of the speedometer must not be impaired, so if the glass has been cracked and distorts your view, your vehicle will fail its MOT test.”

Has anyone of Funs 61,000 members ever failed a MOT because the Speedo didn't work?
But you don't have to believe me.
PS. How do they check if it's accurate?

Sorry, I thought this was a companion to the naturist thread

Look on the bright side. If the speedo isn't working then then mileage is probably not clocking up either. GPS speedo less than a tenner.

It will be the transporter in the gearbox, very common problem.

The gearbox specialist gave me the transponder part number so, I will order one and hopefully that will solve the problem.

I'd really like the speedo working so that my low mileage cannot be questioned when selling.

I'll post back later next week.

My Speedo stopped working in Spain a few years ago just as we set off from La Manga, it was a blown fuse which also affected other things as well. I kept replacing the fuse every few miles until I ran out and then did not bother.
When I got home and it was looked at the person who fitted the cruise control at the dealers had scotch clipped it to the main wiring harness which then cost £3000 to replace.
