Spare wheel and jack

My van came without a spare.
So i designed a carrier bought a spare with same tyre. I would find some twt to throw out for payload issues.
I would not suggest anyone does without a spare.
Changing it is another matter.
But word of warning, i took advice from here and checked i could undo the wheel nuts.
Anybody got a spare 15inch fiat or Rapido hubcap.
Dont forget the tie wraps.
Look in classifieds there are 4 hubcaps for sale I saw them yesterday

Wheel yes but no jack no point it won’t lift my a class anyway.
I called the Rac one and told them not to send anyone unless they had a large jack, the guy turned up and guess what his jack couldn’t lift it at all so they then sent someone with a bigger jack that did the job and there’s no way I’m carrying a jack that size around with me

What does your MH weigh?

Just suffered a blowout on Sunday in our new van, luckily not on the motorway. Used the emergency call button on the Mercedes, connected straight through to recovery, they showed up within an hour, pretty good for a weekend. Watching the palava of getting the spare out of its holder under the van, he had to disconnect it completely to clear the tow bar and watching the size of trolley jack used, you can forget me ever changing a wheel!! Relieved it came with a spare not gunk, I would have been stuck. Now trying to find a replacement Continental!

We have always carried a spare and a jack and wouldn't consider travelling without them. If I was short on payload I would think of something else to ditch. I also check the air pressure in the spare fairly regularly which also ensures the spare release mechanism hasn't seized which I have heard can be a common problem on Ducatto vans

The question of Jack's has come up before if you have a let's say 5 tonne van you dont need a 5 tonne jack you are only lifting 1 corner commercial tyre fitters dont carry a 44 tonne to lift a lorry they carry a maximum 30 tonne anc that's overkill because they are using it all day and they dont carry trolley hacks they use bottle jacks which are relatively small. The real question is how many could actually undo the wheel nuts or have the knowledge to know where to put the jack in the first place oh and another thing why do you think its safer for the breakdown mechanic to change the wheel than it is for you just because he has lots of flashing lights doesn't make him invincible

It’s not a weight thing more of a height thing, your going to need a jack that goes up about 2 feet plus to cover the chassis height and the suspension travel and there is no way I’d want to use blocks of wood.

A bottles jacks centre is threaded so it screws up a distance before you start the jacking process

Ive a couple of 2 ton jacks that are not up to the task, not enough travel. Just been looking at 3 and 5 t jacks but which one. Any idea what min clearance is and what lift needed for front suspension?
Edit x219 ducato

Always better to go over the top if can so id go for the 5ton if its low enough to fit under the front but I can't help you on clearance or lift and I would also make sure you can undo the wheel nuts before you go any where because if they havnt been off for a while or have been tighten with a windy gun they will be tight so make a simple job a bitch if its dark wet and cold

That's how i lost the hubcap.
The std ducato jacking point has a hole in middle, this prevented use of my bottle jack( goes straight up hole)
Is there a jacking pad that locates in hole and on jack?

All prepared to change wheel myself .. we have HPC hydraulic jacks and carry spare wheel and torque wrench along with 12v compressor.

I cant help wondering how many people have carried all this equipment - and for how long - and never had cause to use it :Eeek: :Eeek:

I don't have a spare on 3 of my vehicles, only the MoHo is the one where I can make a cup of tea whilst awaiting the Concierge to have a new Tyre fitted. Thats why the manufactures often describe MoHo's as being like a 5* hotel ;)

The compressor I have used many times, the jacks we use everywhere we pitch and the torque wrench I have only used at home so far. We have needed spare wheels on a number of occasions, but previously had to wait for RAC but hopefully no need to wait any more.

As somebody above said, it's like any form of insurance which one begrudgingly pays for and hopes never to use.

The current van is the first one I've not had to use it on, car made up for that a couple of weeks ago with a puncture.

Couldn't you hove used the goo and compressor? Although a car wheel is a doddle and you still have to pay for it to be repaired

Is goo good forever?

Our MINI had sod all in it apart from a can of useless crap. When the rear tyre shreaded on the M6 in Cumbria on a Sunday night we were stuffed, several hours later we got a new tyre, I won't make that mistake again.

🤔 I'm just looking at bottle Jacks for the van now, some come in cases that might slide under the passenger seat 😊

Bottle Jacks won't go under ours, rear axle is only 16cm off the ground. A low profile telescopic will but they only lift 100mm and are £200 🙄

Just drive your flat wheel up a levelling ramp and then the Jack will go under the axle and you will only have to raise it a half inch.BUSBY.

Goo seldom
works on bike tyres,,BUSBY.

With our levellers that would give an extra 9cm 🤔 but with the tyre flat too the axle would be much lower anyway. No wonder they come with scissor Jacks.

I pulled a screw out of it and you could just feel the air coming out only lost a few pounds by the time I got to the local tyre place. I wouldn't trust the goo.

Our van is 4500kg Fiat jack works fine. My 2 tonne trolly jack won't budge it, I think the problem with small trolly Jack's is the lever is not long enough.

You jack under the lowest point, usually the axle at the rea & the wishbone at front3" is off the ground.

But as soon as you leave it behind you'll need it.Same as throwing anything out.you want it the next day

No. Once used the tyre cannot be repaired. as In if Lenny had used goo on it then went for a proper repair they'd have shown him the door &sold him a new tyre.

Trolley jack I keep in van lifts 1,4T needs 135mm to get under axle or wishbone so isn't a problem .Being short in length is so starting to lift takes time. Didn't cost a lot,£30 seems to ring a bell, but no idea what make it is?
Clarke 3T one I use at home is proper 1m length trolley but that only needs the 90mm clearance for the wheels as the lifting head is lower than the wheels & between them. Fortunately I bought it new off a bloke who didn't want it? About 500mm lift on this & the one in the van lifts 280mm As long as under axle need hardly any lift.

years ago you used to be able to buy the air bags that work off the exhaust for£19,95 . Think I will have a look out for one next time I am over

Would it be acceptable to use towbar mounting points to jack?
Doubt it as they are at the end of the chassis.
If you have an Al-Ko chassis you should only jack the rear on the reinforcing plate the suspenion is mounted on. A jack anywhere else on the chassis can damage the chassis.

It is very important to know the correct jacking points I've yet to come across a tyre fitter or breakdown guy who knows how to jack up an Al-Ko chassis you need to tell them.

We did a weight reduction exercise with view to downplate to 3500kg. It worked. Things we removed were :-
Spare wheel.
Microwave oven.
One gas bottle.
Fresh water.
My tools.
Her months supply of Coca-Cola.
Portable induction hob.
Loads of tinned food.
Fortunately we tow a lightweight aluminium box trailer,so guess where all that lot went!!
