So here I am having covered over a thousand miles driving round Spain and now on my way home. During this time it has become very obvious that the road surfaces in Spain are in almost immaculate condition nearly everywhere.
I now think about the state of the surfaces of British roads and wonder just what the hell is going on?
Just exactly where and when are we going to get our nice the new resurfaced roads - very long overdue.

I could show you some VERY bad roads in Spain, please believe me 😂

And when Barries roads have finished with you, I'll show you some more.

Sure, the Spanish spent (borrowed a lot of money to straighten out the roads umpteen years ago but, and it's a big but, those roads now need maintenance and, after our trip in Sept-Oct. I can state that many of them ain't had that repair.

Not done a lot of driving in Spain in recent years.

But we found driving the 700km between Badajoz, Salamanca, Santander this spring, the road was in dreadful condition.
The road quality noticeably declined as soon as we left Portugal.

To the level that we needed to drive in the fast lane, on an empty road, just to reduce the noise from the rattles from the rear!

I find the roads in Spain better than the ones in the UK and significantly less busy too - perhaps the two are related. Also possibly less frost damage, although a lot of Spain is quite high and perhaps does have significant frost in the winter.

We left Portugal this morning where I thought the majority of the roads were decent, after leaving I thought I’d took a wrong turn and ended up back in Dumfries 😂, the roads between the border and just outside Seville certainly haven’t been perfect.

I thought the non toll roads in much of Portugal were dire

Often when the dual carriageways or motorways are quiet we drive in the outside lane which is in vastly better nick! Still feels a bit “not right”.

Heavy vehicles using arterial routes are bound to suffer in Spain...but generally speaking we find the roads to be in good condition..we have been caught out a few times. One particular route that looked scenic to us ended up being 60km of 2nd gear driving with no alternative...both saying it should be better just round the next bend....it never was..Such Fun...

There's definitely less potholes which is a good thing .

We recently bought a new car, the old one was great on fast corners but with low profile tyres and firm suspension it was often extremely uncomfortable to drive on UK roads. Our first priority with the new car was to find one that could cope better with the rough surfaces we have to drive on. We are very pleased to say we found one and it is a great improvement. Obviously pot holes will still be a problem but the general rough surfaces are far less noticeable.

They're building the Southern section of our city bypass at the moment and their newsletter says they're using Cement Bound Granular Mixture as this is a better material than the traditional stuff used (type 1 sub base ?) but the completed 10 year old Northern section has already had extensive patching and if you get behind a crocodile of local drivers, you end up doing the Conga as they all swerve around the potholes (visitors to the area tend to hit the holes and brake or swerve at the last minute) so I hope this new material is gonna be an improvement ?

I like the roads in Spain and Portugal, they are great fun and mostly deserted. ;-)
