Popped in this morning to get myself a 5 year fishing licence in Estepona - just I had done 5 years ago - and was told that systems have changed since then and I now need an NIE to apply.
Asked them why a passport wouldn’t do as it had previously but they had no idea.

I said that tourists must therefore be officially banned from fishing in Spain and the guys in the office told me that I had a good point but ... unable to help.

To all Spanish resident funsters:
Can tourists obtain an NIE?

(Not that I’m a “proper” fisherman. I’ve only managed to catch a cold when trying but there is something very nice about fishing amongst locals.)

Yes, tourists (non residents) can get a NIE. How easy it is now, I dont know.

All the non resident, second home owners need an NIE. Maybe someone can give advice?

Take from this what you want....I am a resident, I fish many Coastal locations in Spain....I get my license for Free as I'm a pensioner .....I have to prove I receive a government pension...
Quite often I fish amongst groups of Spanish fishermen, I've often wondered if I was the only legal caster there...just a thought..
I've never been asked to produce my license, and quite often seen lots of bad practice..catch size etc not complying..
Go to the Police National and see if you can apply for a NIE....I had one years before I became resident....Good luck..

Indeed.
I’ve been having a chat with some fishing association members here at the port and only one out of 5 says that he’s got himself a licence. I would like to do things properly though!

It would be good for tourists who like to fish and the country itself if they offered uncomplicated over-the-counter temporary permits of say 3-6 months for c€10 and sell them at angling shops who would take a commission.

Posiblemente demaciado simple?

Far too simple indeed....👍🇪🇦😃

Get one of the free English papers with match results and contact the local club secretary they will point you in the right direction to get a licence. Don't think you need an now but it could have changed

I'm really confused by this there is a website promising to supply a licence by return of post and at a cost way above what is on the Spanish government website
Apparently there is an exam too BUT if you as a tourist have a licence from outside Spain then you don't have to take the exam and they charge for Pensioners but Spanish Pensioners don't pay

Advice as a tourist wanting to fish for 3 months needed guys

Each Spanish region has its own Rules and Procedures to obtain a Fishing License...
My region here in Murcia do not require a Exam and grant me, a Spanish Resident receiving a pension a totally Free one for 5 years...
I am aware that Andalusia required an Exam before granting a license...how up to date this requirement is I'm not sure...
I'm also not 100% sure why the OP was asked for an NIE when asking for a license....
I don't doubt that there are agencies advertising on the internet offering some form of service to obtain a Fishing License, this generally comes at a cost.
Fishermen should also be aware that their activity is restricted...normally avoiding bathing or dog friendly beaches nesting sites for birds too.
One final point is...to be granted a license the applicant should also require a Third Party Insurance cover....this is simple...mine, AXA costs less than 10€ a year.

No exam was mentioned but an appointment is required. (To which you bring your NIE.)
A local said that the Andalucia licence is only valid in Andalucia although my last licence which I took out on Valencia province 5 years ago covered the entire Spanish literal coast.

I might investigate further in between relaxations.... but then again...

I have no idea why the avatar of a woman and the sign came up.
Bloody tech!

A Coastal license is for the whole Spanish coast...lakes and rivers is Regional....

If you were told to bring your NIE, I presume they thought you had one, which you don't...so your passport would be needed...
No mention of Insurance?

The exam and insurance would i assume have been mentioned at the interview... which I couldn’t book because I don’t have the NIE.
Passports no longer a stand-alone authorised doc.

Well if that's what they want, that's what you need to get....
I'm fully aware that requirements change...next time I renew I will take my NIE, TIE, CIP, Photocard Driving Permit, Passport, Birth Certificate, Pensioners card, Marriage Certificate and Cycling proficiency Test Certificate and just in case my 25metre freestyle certificate and I suppose I should wear my medals, Blue Peter Badge and DO E Gold which I got...but not for Fishing....👍🇪🇦😃🤭

I'd better hang on to my NIE from when I owned a property then, in case I ever decide I want to do a bit of fishing.

We inquired as a few of our clients here on holiday wanted to sea fish, but found they would need to do the exam and get a licence - unviable if you're on a week's holiday. We then went on to see if we could get a corporate licence for, say, 2px in any week our clients could fish 'under' but that concept was totally alien.

In th end we decided it wasn't worth the candle, so just offered the rods, rests and tackle boxes for use foc, with a full explanation and advised that if challenged they played the full "no speaky Spanish" card and just walked away.

As luck would have it, no one ever was, and the odd ones who did take up the offer usually came up a bit sheepish after failing, both miserably and comically, to remove small, hungry, octopi from their tackle.
