Venison burgers - yumI fear there will be a lot of culling soon
They're doing a lot of browsing of new growth on shrubs & stuff, and they're digging up (but not eating) daffodil bulbs, and eating tulips and lilies. They usually visit at twilight or overnight and mostly they're just passing through. A lot of my neighbours are getting a bit fed up of them but personally, I don't mind them at all. I'd be more worried of they were looking underfed but they're really quite healthy. My main issue is that they're bringing extra ticks into the gardens, as if we didn't have enough with sheep, rabbit etcAll great till they munch the garden
They do that here they will end up on my menu.
Totally agree Stephen, if they're going to be killed anyway. My objection is to the killing, when it's because of a belief that humans have more right to life than other creatures.Venison burgers - yum
Sorry Wendy but if they're being culled, waste not...
Philosophically, would the herds even exist if not for the hunting etc?

Whilst I have no issues with culling deer to keep a healthy population it is unfortunate that the Scottish government are becoming obsessed with wiping them out.View attachment 1034527
... which is lovely to see, but these boys really should be up in the hills by now, population pressure is just too great, I fear there will be a lot of culling soon![]()
Local deer farm to me is excellent but during the hunting season they have great deals on pheasant they prepare and pack all you need to do is pop in ovenWhilst I have no issues with culling deer to keep a healthy population it is unfortunate that the Scottish government are becoming obsessed with wiping them out.
They are an excellent top quality food choice but are almost worthless to the game dealers. This makes culling expensive and undesirable so numbers are increasing and making them a target of government intervention due to tree damage and road casualties.
Pheasant is another brilliant meal but like the venison is almost worthless. Some of the larger shoots have been known to bury them as the game dealers offering 50p a brace is a joke. Farm shops are becoming the only places to find wild game.Local deer farm to me is excellent but during the hunting season they have great deals on pheasant they prepare and pack all you need to do is pop in oven

I wonder what the Dinosaurs and Mammoth would say about a finding a balance?Totally agree Stephen, if they're going to be killed anyway. My objection is to the killing, when it's because of a belief that humans have more right to life than other creatures.
As to your philosophical question - well without human intervention, most species adapt, develop and find their own balance and have done for millennia before this little pocket of time when humans are shaping the world - and doubtless will continue to do so long after we're gone.
Nothing like prepared peasants…..Local deer farm to me is excellent but during the hunting season they have great deals on pheasant they prepare and pack all you need to do is pop in oven
Good telescopic sight and 0.338 round….. Easy.
I live on the North Yorkshire moors and in the shooting season they have a JCB following the shoot and just bury them. Sad innit..Pheasant is another brilliant meal but like the venison is almost worthless. Some of the larger shoots have been known to bury them as the game dealers offering 50p a brace is a joke. Being shot makes the supermarkets not want to be involved but it isn’t ever going to stop the need to shoot deer as there are no natural predators and introducing suitable predators would have undesirable outcomes for other wildlife and humans.
Yes, it’s indefensible to shoot them just to bury them.I live on the North Yorkshire moors and in the shooting season they have a JCB following the shoot and just bury them. Sad innit..![]()
