Buy one nxt yr
Hiya can I just ask, I am hiring a van before purchase. When a site says electruc 16 amp or 18 amp will the motorhome I am hiring be able to support this how does it work. Thank you

Yes you connect motorhome to campsite power source (ehu ) via an electric cable which I would think the hired van will come equipped with cable . Make sure you get a full instructions on how to set up van at the site . All vans are different so important they explain this to you .

Hi and welcome

Many hire companies have a video of their handover.
Make sure you view it fully before you start your trip.
I have met a few that had not even been shown how to put water in the tank or the boiler on for hot water.

UK typically 16A, Europe can be as low as 3A. You can work around this by having fancy batteries and inverters if you don't want to be tied to EHU posts. Careful use of heater/boiler/kettle separately can cope with lower ampage.

A little equation will help you if you are wondering whether something you want to run will work or not.

Watts / Voltage = Amps required.

Eg.
1000w heater / 240V AC = 4.17Amps.

Hope I got that right 👍🏼

DON'T inadvertently put diesel in the fresh water tank!
(Quite a few hirers have done and sorting it is a very costly business).
And Welcome!

Plug your motorhome into the campsite mains with the EHU lead
(presumably supplied) and then your 240volt sockets in the van will work (they won't work when not plugged in*).

*When not plugged in you will only have 12 volt off the battery which will run the interior lights, water pump, heater fan, usb sockets. Electronics for the fridge (but not the fridge itself - that will be gas when not on EHU)

16 amps is the power campsites in the UK normally supply - this is enough to run the fridge, kettle, water heater/blown air heating and microwave if it has one. Basically enough for your general use.

The 6 amp or 16 amp is what the site are willing to let you have.

So basically they are restricting how much you can have at any one time. The basics of are that NO your motorhome won’t know, and if you are too greedy you will trip the EHU bollard/socket that you are plugged into. Sometimes you can just pop a cover and reset it (same as a fuse in a fuse box at home) other times you have to go cap in hand say “please sir, I was naughty and trippeded the electric”, which will be fairly standard for them. Just run one thing at a time and you will be fine, and soon learn.

I would suggest that you take a video of the handover you get from the hire company. That way you have a visual record of what you need to do. It is a lot to take in on any new van, and you will be able to review it as needed. As above, no vans are exactly the same. Enjoy your trip.

That's exactly what happened to us on our first van. So good point (y)

Yes, don't worry everything will work on that. Just plug it in 👍😊

Don't take a high voltage toaster like we used to and blow the fuse on the EHU bollard.

Remember to connect the EHU to the Van before you connect to the Mains Supply ⚡⚡⚡

Use your mobile phone to video the handover. It will pay dividends when you need to do something.
