I've bought a pair of snow socks for our Hymer in order to be compliant with local mountain rules here in France, but I've never used them before. Has anyone had to use then in anger? How did they perform?

Should be okay on snow, but they will be ripped apart within yards when they come in contact with a tarmac road surface.

They work much better than most people give them credit

People think it’s better to fit full chains, but in reality they are a PITA to fit, use, and carry about. Slipping on a set socks is far easier, and you are going to be more likely to use them and be happy to take them on and off as required. Unlike chains.

In reality chains should be called ice chains, not snow chains. In snow chains can cause more problems than they solve, unlike socks. Chains are fantastic on ice, but have many downsides, socks also work in ice.

If you travel on the west side of France you will not need them. But like it has been said, they will not last long when used in anger.

I found snow socks useless in anything more than a very light covering of snow

I’ve used snow sock and rate them easy on filthy to take off
Michelin do a rope type sock , never used mine in anger but easy to fit
Practice fitting at home, then pack a head torch, gloves, kneeling pad, dayglo vest and plastic bag into a kit bag somewhere accessible
I have spider chains for the car , fab

I have used them and they worked to get me out of deep snow.

Agree with others though, as soon as you hit mixed stuff or tarmac, remove them. They can rip and wrap around the wheel and hub if you aren’t careful with very expensive results. :-(

They were easier to fit than chains, but only just.

I now have chains.
