Hi folks.we are planning to go over simplon pass later this month into italy,
however google maps shows a closure until 30th April.
Looking at the location of the closure I think it's probably roadworks with (hopefully) a diversion in place and not as I first suspected a seasonal snow closure.ive looked on the Michelin map site and it shows nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can't help with specifics, but I know a lot of the Alpine passes don't open until well into May depending on local conditions.
Edit : Google Maps is usually pretty good on identifying closures

Google maps will not route you down there in winter or till May as it’s one of the passes usually closed in winter👍

Travelling back to the UK in the next couple of weeks from Italy (Pisa tomorrow) Is the Simplon pass an easy route please, in terms of hair pin bends etc? Looking for an easier route than St Barnard and Julien Pass! We have done Brenner and Gotthard tunnel, so looking for something other than the Mont Blanc, thanks

Looking at the map it shows a tunnel. Is it a car tunnel ?

Very easy, there were road works two weeks ago which involved several minutes waiting, but as the views are so good it is a bonus!

Just watched a YouTube video. Looks easy enough ...... Will be going over tomorrow from Italy to Switzerland, potentially stay overnight at the top before going on to a campsite on Lac de Carouge (ACSI) or Lake Geneva Camping Saint Disdille (ACSI)

There are a few apparently, you just need to pay tourist tax. Saw them on P4N ...

Super easy route. All the snow has gone in the last 2wks even at +2000m and of course the road is in great condition (Swiss side, bit bumpier on the Italian side). HGV‘s pass it all day long as do coaches. I‘ll be over it again on Monday afternoon and back Thursday eve.

For me it‘s my preferred route if you like driving, much nicer that St Bernard tunnel.

And yes every tea/lunch stop we level up, 2 clicks as someone said, why not😂

Thanks, can you confirm there are stopover points for the night. We just want to break our journey, it's not imperative but it would be nice! We are currently at Lake Orta in Italy (and have the swiss vignette)

We stayed at the Aire just outside camping Vidy in Lausanne, you need to be comfortable with an aire though! Electric and travel pass included as well as use of the campsite facilities. The whole area from there to Montreux is great, we stayed breaking up the journey south but didn't explore so stopped for two nights on the way back. Got the train to Montreux and Vevey, I think the Jazz festival is on at Vevey soon!!

There‘s quite a few places you can park up. The obvious place is at the summit at Blick, but it‘s noisy and busy. Best place i would recommend is about 500m before the hotel monte-leone as you come up from Italy. There‘s a discreet side road with some parking about 75m off the road with a fantastic view:

Finding the side road isn‘t easy as it‘s pretty well hidden and that‘s a fast bit of the road and usually you‘ll have a queue of traffic up your backside. If you miss it then you can take the next one (it‘s a loop) after about 400m.

Decided to press on, towards Lausanne, but thanks anyway. Not a bad route as you said, so appreciate the heads up.
SVMC15 - bloody road works !!

If you head to Lausanne then there‘s only really Camping de Vidy, nice site and well located for the town. About 45mins before that around Villeneuve there‘s a few options with a nice one at the water park at (Aquaparc) which has a nice drop slide😳
