Decided last week to have a few days away at CMCsite at Wharfedale site. Set off on Friday got there a bit early so sat outside the site till 1 o'clock. Van in front started to go in so I started the van- lasted about 15 secs then died. Bloody hell what next - I'd spent a fortune on the van since buying it- some necessities and some preventative as there was no history with it.
Anyhow, sent for the RAC and after a couple of hours Peter drove up in his nice orange van. After telling him what had happened he lifted the bonnet and had a cursory look at the engine. This is a Renault Master base and the diesel system has a rubber bellows to prime the fuel before it goes through the filter- well this gadget had obviously given problems before and had been bodged with some tape and 2 cable-ties. Unfortunately the rubber after a mere 17 years was degrading and splitting at the outlet end and drawing air and not fuel.
Peter took it off and did a "temporary" repair by cleaning everything with brake cleaner, squirt a dollop of super glue in the rubber, put it back together, and put 3 new cable ties on. We the left it for a little while then he pumped up some fuel and said try to start it. Eureka, engine started immediately and settled down to a smooth tick-over.
He said it might leak again but they would come out again to it as it was temporary repair.
We stayed on site until today, before setting off I checked the engine for diesel leaks but everything was dry and it started straight away. Drove the 50 miles home steadily and managed it without incident or stopping!!
Van is booked in on Thursday for new part to be fitted.
Hopefully we will have no more expense (for a while, anyway)
Cheers, Dave.
ps Lidl are selling a mini oven at 50% off just £17.99
We bought one for the van a few weeks ago for the van and it works a treat, so we have bought another !
