We have decided to sell our motorhome as it doesn’t suit us and will wait to buy another one:
We contacted the original dealer who agreed to buy it back but wanted to reduce the price by £9000 as this was they VAT they paid on it when they sold it to us brand new and a further obvious reduction as it is now a used motorhome. We bought it brand new 12 months ago and only has 3k mileage. Purchase price 56k and they wanted to give us 43k!
We phoned a different dealership who offered us 52k as it is a desirable MH with lots of added extras. They know they could sell it quickly end would rather have a MH than an empty space.
Is the original dealer trying to work a fast one!!

They are in business to make money. Your van your choice which offer you take , you could call them back with the counter offer to see if they will meet or beat it .but as you don't want it , take the highestest offer. Remember it will go on the forecourt with a higher ticket price. Not only that, the dealers have waiting lists. The second dealer probably has a customer lined up. Quick return with some profit.

The original dealer would find a buyer just as easy as the second dealer. We know they will make a profit but want the ease of using a dealership to take it off our hands.
The question is really are the original dealer being a bit underhanded by insisting the buy back price is reduced by VAT? I wouldn’t go back to them as I just don’t trust them now

They made an offer you do not have to take it. Did you think they were underhand when you bought it from them ? Or is it because they are now not giving you what you want . It may be personal to you its just business to them. Everyone is nice when selling.you buy a dream they buy/sell units.they may have used the VAT as an excuse to offer low or it could be they don't want the van back. Very often if we didn't want a job rather than refuse 'over quote' and the customer would go elsewhere
Try not to take it personally ring around a few more dealers see what happens.i hope you get the best deal avalable
You could try selling privately but like you said you want convience and that costs.you are moving into the prime time for selling you could try an advert on here in the classifieds good luck

Many thanks for your replies. They definitely want it as they offered to pick it up the same day and take it off our hands!!! I just wanted to understand if taking off the VAT was usual practice.

It's just a naff negotiating ploy. Most of the VAT they will reclaim, effectively only paying VAT on the profit. Taxes sort themselves out and are not really your concern. Your van is worth what it is worth, regardless.

As Jim says input \ output VAT minimises the tax liabilities.

If it was me I'd go back to your supplying dealer and advise them that, out of courtesy, you won't be taking up their offer as you've received much more attractive offers and thank them for their interest. It's up to you then, if they were to match your best offer, on whether to take them up on it however I'd be challenging them on how they can move their offer so drastically!

If it was brand new, they didn't pay the VAT, you did. They just cut into their profit margin, now, in my opinion, they are trying to get some of it back!

Have you considered a sale or return deal ? If you not in a rush agree a sale price ( which may be your buy price) less the sales fee £4-£5k

Why would you sell it back to the original dealer if someone else offered you more. The vat thing is just an excuse to offer you less money. I would phone around a few more and be tempted to go back to the original one and say you have had a much better offer is it their final bid

I would also put it on the classifieds at £54k no offers

Of course they want it, they will sell it for £60k or more. If another dealer is offering £52k that tells you its worth a lot more than £52k.

The van is now yours to sell where you like, where you got it from doesn't really come into it, if you want to sell just take the highest offer from wherever but make sure you have the money in your hand before handing over the keys and documents.

There is a big shortage of nearly new vans, as the waiting list for new is huge. On average most vans have either increased in value or stayed static. You paid £56k, so probably still worth that value wise to sell. A dealer will offer about £7k less to make their profit and pay the warranty when they sell it

There are plenty of dodgy dealers about that will try their best to rip you off

The dealer might as well say that the reason for their low buy-back offer is they are busy making beef stroganoff.

Any excuse will do.

The original dealer will be hoping that his sale and service to you as loyalty to them I guess.

test a private sale with todays prices you could be o.k.

And there lies the discrepancy between the two prices.
These days, whether it’s insurance, tv package, breakdown cover or MoHo dealers, “loyalty” is the common denominator in removing as much money as humanly possible from your wallet. Make no mistake!

Sell to the highest bidder.

Just make certain you have the cash in your hand or 4days for the cheque to clear before handing over the keys, there are some very clever scammers around at the moment!

Also, like Jim says, the value of you van, is the value of your van.
Just supposing it’s still 56k. One dealer will pay you 52k for a 4K profit and others will offer you 46k for a 10k profit.
Nobody will offer you 56k unless the value has increased.
The difference between “trade” & “retail” used to be circa 8 - 10k, but this last 18 months has increased their profits considerably. Let’s just say that they’ve been pushing the boundaries.
