I am considering selling my motor home, it is a LHD, registered in France. My question, is there a market for LHD in the uk? Thanks in advance

There is a market for LHD. People who regularly take their van to the continent prefer LHD so should be no major problem selling it. Just emphasise how much easier continental travel would be in your van when advertising.

Not sure the LHD would be a deal breaker as those who spend a lot of time outside the UK would benefit from this. However, if its still on French Number Plates, that could be an issue. Perhaps you ought to register it in the UK (if you are able to) so its ready for Sale.

It will be a smaller market for LHD ...... BUT plenty of people that don't care or do see the advantages if they want to explore th continent.

I'd be very reluctant to buy a french registered motorhome living in the UK. What would be the advantage selling it here rather than in France? If a UK buyer wanted it they would have to register it in the UK with the assosciated hassle might have problems insuring it until it's on UK registration and wouldn't they have to pay UK vat on it?

Yes VAT is not payable on second hand vehicles.
If the OP has UK residency they could import it without VAT.

It is something I would seek to change if I believe the uk market would be better.

I believe the currency difference at moment favours uk more than Europe.

I’ve had both LHD and RHD. It makes no difference to me but it’s easier with RHD in the U.K. and LHD in Europe.
It wouldn’t put me off buying but those who don’t do Europe probably wouldn’t want one.

Cars are definitely worth a lot more money in France (LHD) compared to UK price (RHD). I had assumed it would be the same with motorhomes but haven’t really researched it.

Re registering in UK will need some modifications and costs, also a UK address.

How would you sell it? Through a dealer, broker or privately? Would you be around to show it, many times?

Has it got a Certificate of Conformity? If not it may need an idividual vehicle inspection at cost.

All-in-all the cost and hassle of re-registration may outweigh the better price you think you can get in UK.

Try marketing to the Aussie travelling market
Many buy in Europe travel for a year or so then sell on. Depends if course on age and price of van

I have has both lhd and rhd and prefer lhd if available. Two reasons.

1. Lhd is on the right side when touring (we don't do much uk)
2. The van layout is geared to lhd even in a rhd one ie if a single drivers door usually on the wrong side, furniture in the way. My present rhd has limited movement of the driving seat because of furniture behind it. Passenger seat has much more movement. I suppose it would be a problem if a uk van but I wouldn't normally consider one.

Tried to sell lhd manual last year. No success. Manual was the issue mainly. Fortunately changed my mind anyway

Having lived in France for 15 years myself, I wonder why you don't sell it there? Use 'Le Bon Coin ' as your advertiser. With a valid 'Contrôle Technique' the residuals for decent vehicles are greater than you would achieve in the UK.I have never had any difficulty in selling 4 vehicles. All the correct forms and procedures are easily available on the French Government website,in English if needed.
