Schengen and 90 days for those already in Schengen on Brexit Day

Imagine being banned from France for life.

I don’t think I could survive:rolleyes:

I get the feeling that you don't like France or the French Chris.

If it's true then can I join your club please.

Currently Multiple entry Schengen Visa's apply the 3 months in 6 rule, when ETIAS comes into force the visa waiver is for 3 years so does this 3 months in 6 months rule in any Schengen country then lapse and travellers will then be subject to the current rules that apply to residents of Schengen countries ie apply for residency after 3 months?
Yes but countries in the schengen & those with an opt out, Uk,Ireland ,etc; their citizens can pop out at 89 days & restart the clock the non.eu citizens cannot.

Best thing to do is stick your head where the sun don't shine and whistle Dixie.

It is actually possible to stay for longer than 90 days once/if we become a 3rd country by applying for a non lucrative visa. Pretty stringent conditions ie DBS checks, no weird diseases, private medical cover and about 2650 euros income per month. To ‘work out’ the 90 day stuff it’s best to count 180 days back from the date you are at. Back to back 90 days doesn’t work, there has to be a clean break of 90 days. The problem with that for example is if you have done your 90 days then popping across for a war graves visit or to visit relatives in Italy is a non starter in that period. If we crash out, OH is going to Greece in June and the clock starts ticking and we can’t then go on a long trip until December because if we use our remaining days up in late summer into Autumn we can’t then ‘winter’ in Spain. Irony is that before the EU we could stay in Europe indefinitely by country hopping.

Or....
Fill the van up with alcohol and sufficient food,(but don't forget the alcohol), hang around in northern Europe and then when the weather improves bugger off to Scandinavia for the summer.
Come September (ish) leave Scandinavia and worry about this bollox when we have to return for the mot.

I don't think that works either as all of Scandinavia is in the Schengen area which is where this 90 days in any 180 applies.

Thank you for your reply, but that is the whole point.
We are going anyway and don't care.
We will worry, (or not), about it in September no matter what happens.

Lot of anecdotal evidence from non EU travellers sites that ‘overstaying’ is not a good idea. People have had their passports stamped as persona non grata for 5 years. Germany it would appear is the most strict.

I have probably said this before but I have had my first pints of proper ale in almost a year so I apologise now.
We have spent several months travelling around the Southern coast of Spain.
Me thinks they will have to come up with something or....
Remind the last Brit that leaves to turn the lights out.

It's pointless speculation. It's never going to be made a hanging offence. Just go. Take it as it comes. Life is too short.

It might never come at all!
Obviously you're right we don't know but for those of us who book long trips far in advance it's worth at least being prepared and comply with the 90 days in 180 retrospectively. We're off to Norway in June with GB motorhomes and thought that if we liked it we'd book up to do Greece with them for April 2020 and it's already full! I was trying to do some calculations for if we then hung around in Italy but when we'd need to leave to have a big enough gap before our annual winter sun trip.

I know no one is going to come knocking on my door and fining me if I overstay but the problem will be after I have left. I do not want any black marks on my records when I renew my ESTA, the Americans are not reknowned for a c'est la vie approach! My daughter is being posted to Bangladesh, they are doing away with tourist visas on arrival, I want to visit.

So yes you are right that we don't know what the out come will be but for those of us who travel beyond Europe it's probably worth making sure any longer trips are compliant with the 90 days in 180.

If in a MH it appears that campsites are quite expensive and wildcamping illegal, so you may need a big pension.

Why should leaving the EU have any effect on travelling to Schengen states, we are not in the Schengen area now?

"Note: Although most of the Schengen countries are in the European Union, you should not confuse the Schengen Area with the EU."

From: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/schengen-visa-countries-list/
They need to abolish the whole 90 dat nonsense anyway . As long as you are not a criminal , claiming benefits of the country you're visiting ,and able to financially support yourself...you should be able to stay as long as you like.
The hippy in me is downright fed up of this big brother we own the land let's make lots of rules bollocks.

People are people ...the world belongs to no one and everyone and folk should be able to explore it without all these restrictions

So if a fleet of ships carrying tens of thousands of economic migrants, with sufficient funds to sustain themselves whilst they obtain employment and somewhere to live, sails into the Firth of Forth you'll be putting out the welcome banners then?;)

I have posted elsewhere but had a mail from General Accident (car ins.) they will cover vehicles if exceeding the 90 days or the 180 days in a year but only 3rd party so if other insurance companies follow wonder if snowbirds will be happy or willing to take the risk.
