Hello!
I have a Schaudt EBL99 in a Hymer Van 522 from 2006. It is still of those old ones that only charge the lead acid battery for 1h and the gel for 8h but it's already the 18A charger version. It has a couple of issues.

1. One is that suddenly and out of the blue it switches off and won't turn on again or, when it is on, it just won't turn off anymore. This goes for a few hours and the it comes back to to normal. I have observed this in so many occasions that I can confidently say now that it is not related to temperature, low battery voltage, overcurrent, anything that I know as objective and measurable. Sometimes it is as if it goes into protection mode and switches off even the "allways on" outputs. Could it be one of the 2 power relays? Or the integrated circuit that controls the relays? Or something else? What os your suggestion?

2. The other issue the volt and water meter in the control panel, the IT95, doesn't work. The meter it self is damaged, I have tested it and, the circuit is supplying a voltage in the range, between 2 and 4V, I can'treally remember exactly. I already found one supplier in the UK that seems to have it but my question is: is the fault at the meter only or somewhere else in the circuit that might cause them to burn? They are expensive and I wouldn't want to fit a new one and get it burnt again soon. Or is it only a matter of age?

Thank you for your care and comments!
Paulo.

Note to issue no.1: It could also take days to come back to normal, when everything is shut down, even the door step won't have power to move.

I have an EBL99 and not experienced that

What's turning off, the EBL or your control panel ?
The EBL altogether. Even if its in the EHU, the charger will still work, with its yellow light in the control panel, but the EBL dead while it wants... and will suddenly, anytime, come back to life.

Oh that does sound like a faulty EBL
There are a couple of companies in the UK that repair EBL's
Aplujack and A and A Caravans, others may know of ones in Portugal or Spain ?
Unless you have technical knowledge it's probably not a diy fix

The main on/ off switch on the front of the EBL is known to be unreliable and not make good connection. It might be worth disconnecting the EBL from the mains and trying some contact fluid on the switch and turning it on and off multiple times. Most people don't switch the EBL off at all except to remove it for maintenance.
Don't know about repairs in Portugal, in the UK apuljack engineering can repair EBL s.

The EBL box was made by Schaudt, located in Markdorf, Germany. They used to do a very good repair service for EBLs, which is less popular in UK because of border red tape problems. However within the EU the service was fine.

Since I last used the service they have merged into Lippert Europe, so I don't know if they still do repairs. They probably do, so if you are in Portugal it's worth a call or an email to find out. There was a helpful chap called Udo Lang who may still be working there.

It does sound like the electronics in the EBL that is the problem as if it was the switch it would be either off or on not intermittent.
I would try contacting Udo he used to be very helpful.

Inside the EBL there are two power relays, one to switch off the 'permanent' 12V items like the step, and the other that switches off the other 12V items via the '12V' switch on the panel. These relays are 'latching' relays not standard relays. Relays work by a coil which magnetises with a small trigger current, to pull contacts together or apart and control a much larger power current.

Standard relays have a spring that pulls the contacts back if the coil current is removed. Latching relays are different. They are activated by a short current pulse that flips the contacts from one state to the other, like a light switch. They remain in that state until another opposite pulse flips it back again. In the EBL, the pulses to flip the relay come from a small chip. Sometimes a relay might fail, or the problem might be the chip, or even the commands to the chip from the panel switches. This information may help if you are trying to diagnose a fault.
