Might seem a silly question but did you buy the model that actually has a scan function, not all of them do!

yes it is a scanner aswel as a printer and the microsoft programme does scan but its a rubbish copy all fuzzy a=and its not the scanner glass because if i copy something it fine

Have you wired the printer up to your computer or are you using WiFi

Almost certainly a driver problem. Is is an Apple or Windows computer.

using wifi Nige and its windows 10 meanders

It's pretty hard for a scanner to be blurry, there's no optics to be out of focus. Unless the blur you're seeing is from blowing up a very low resolution image? Like from the rapid pre-scan it does first?

I've got an HP Office Jet Pro and I just use the HP software.

I've a samsung scanner that does the same.I even asked a question on here but the results are the same.Even when you get it working a few days later it either won't scan or won't print from the laptop.it's on wifi ,hard wired , had the drivers loaded at least 50 times.

Try wiring it up and reinstalling the software, or download the latest driver for your printer from HP
I downloaded the lastest drivers this morning and it still cant see the scanner but it will print which is a bit odd unless im missing something and I will have to buy a long lead to wire it up to the PC

it does it with everything I scan and im not blowing any images up to send them out of focus

I assume you have tried all teh following?
To find your scanner in Windows 10, you can:
  1. Select Start
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Devices
  4. Select Printers & scanners
  5. Look for your scanner under Printers & devices
If your scanner is part of a multifunction or All-In-One printer, you might only see the printer's name. To see your scanner, you can:
  1. Select your installed printer
  2. Select Manage
  3. Choose your scanner
If still not there, go into Device Manager (Windows Key, type device and it should come up) Right click on it and 'Run as administratrator'. See if the scanner is shown, if so, try updating the driver there. If not there, then the printer software has not installed correctly. Reinstall it by right click 'run as administrator'.

A lot of problems for me with the very similar symptoms that the op as mentioned, as arisen every time Windows decides to update and they are getting more frequent.
When this happens I have to reload every thing to do with the printer and start a fresh.
Also Microsoft is getting more dominant in guiding you to their solutions often at a cost. I am sure s person with a lot more knowledge than me could sort it out a lot more logically than myself, as unfortunately I come under the self taught brigade.

We've an oldish HP scanner/copier and an ancient Medion (Aldi) pc on Windows whatever and quite often have to reload the drivers etc and even then it doesn't always "see" the printer, although it will switch it on from the pc, but often won't do much more ? It was probably worse on wifi, but still plays up now it's hardwired.
It's one of the reasons I don't often do the Euromillions lottery now as sometimes it took me hours to get the ticket scanned and uploaded. I do realise I could probably photograph the ticket with my phone, but I'm usually too late remembering to buy one.

I'm using Windows 11 (I suspect 10 will be the same) and a HP OfficeJet Pro. I only use the HP Smart app. I don't use a Microsoft scanner app.

just tried the smart app and it said it was scanning for about 4 minutes but no scan appeared so i cancelled that

Have you checked that there's not a protective plastic film on your scanner

There was in rhe one a bought a few years ago

yep and polished the glass ive now tried 3 different progammes and they are all the same so im slowing thinking its either a faulty scanner or a rubbish 1 but ive got another hp scanner elsewhere in the office and that is perfect but it decided it didnt like being on my pc anymore so i deleted off thinking it would just download again and no matter what i do or the lads who normally sort out any IT issues I we cant get it to download again hence why i bought a new 1

I stick to Epson cheap and cheerful but they only last about 5 years now as the ink.can be pricey.

But as scanners they work.well

Silly question, have you set the resolution?

I have a reasonably new HP printer/scanner which refused to work at all using WiFi despite it being situated well within range and in the same location as my previous printer. I have resorted to using it hard wired (USB) whence it works perfectly via the HP Smart app although that app does not impress me much.

see i knew someone would get all technical and catch me out, how do i do that then?
When you start scanning you should be offered a choice of resolution, the higher the resolution the more storage. Scanners often default to 100 a good standard is 300 and a document that has to be very clear I use 600

Does it have an SD card slot ?
I use a cheapie Canon wifi printer / scanner but I don't seem able to control it from my Chromebook that I use now.
So I just save anything I scan to the SD card then po it in the Chromebook to use.

My old HP Laserjet M1005 printer / copier / scanner is still going strong. Long may it last. It is one reason I am keeping an old laptop with Windows XP Pro, so I can carry on using this HP peripheral because having searched, there are no HP driver updates compatible with Windows 10.

Planned obsolescence to boost sales of new inkjet kit (that I don't want)? Not very environmentally friendly.

I've had the same issues. Binned the bloody thing. Absolutely useless. I even have a hp computer and it would not connect no matter what I tried to do.

We've used a number of different HP printers and multi-function devices and never install the HP software as it's woeful! Only install the required drivers.
We're also using an OKI multi-function with only the drivers (including WIA and TWAIN) installed.
For actual scanning we use this https://www.naps2.com/
It's free, relatively simple and can be tweaked to desired quality, etc.
You can set up multi-individual profiles depending upon the MFP capabilities.
We have scan from glass, scan from automatic document feeder and duplex from automatic document feeder set-up.

Meh. The HP software is pretty simple and low frills. I don't find it that obtrusive. Most stuff is driverless now (or rather, all printers use the same common windows unified driver). It doesn't install a ton of craplets like I've had with previous Canon and Epson printers. It works just as well from multiple windows PCs (including locked down work machines), Chromebooks and Android phones. Not tried with my Linux machines yet though...

Agreed most units will work with the unified driver but if you want / need full access to the unit it's better to install the manufacturers drivers.

Used to be a big HP fan having had LaserJet 3, 4, 4000, etc and various ink multifunction devices but was put off latterly by their software (bloatware!). Maybe they've "amended their policy" on their software now?

Currently mainly using an ancient Dell 1320n laser with unified driver and an OKI 363 multifunction with dedicated drivers. Really like the OKI policy with there being around half a dozen different pieces of software / drivers so you can be selective on what you instal whereas as HP used to be an all or nothing approach.
