Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
After a trip to Garlieston I had to fuel up in Newton Stewart this morning, but just getting into the garage was bloody awkward.
A guy in a 70plate Bailey motorhome had come onto the forecourt against the normal flow of traffic & he couldn't give two hoots about the people who were trying to point out that he had jammed the whole place up.

So I sat in the open yard next to the filling station for the chaos to clear, I was busy chatting while waiting & just looking around when it dawned on me that he was busy filling his fresh water tank with diesel!
He looked a bit perplexed by the amount of diesel he was putting in & the damage was already done. I couldn't have got near to him, so there was no point in me doing anything.
I've probably caught it on dashcam, but not had a chance to download it yet, I think it was a hired motorhome, when I got a bit nearer I spotted in large writing FRESH WATER ONLY on the filler.

What on earth makes these people tick?

I know that garage the only one in the area with lpg and it’s not the cheapest. I topped up there in May and the garage was going to be rebranded and she didn’t know if they would continue to sell lpg I think Shell were taking it over.

I dare say if his wife had filled it up she'd have checked then double checked then if she still wasn't sure she'd have read the manual

I really can't imagine how much that's going to cost to sort out , new water tank at least then depending how far it's got into the system, boiler , what's the betting it goes down the drain and he leaves a hosepipe in in for a day before returning it

Holiday over..
new tank .new pipework.new pump.

Massive headache 😬

BTW please upload the dashcam footage

I've just watched the video on the loss of the observatory , have they caught anyone yet.

Please check and see if you have the footage . I’ve just had to stop a hired motorhome occupant attempting to dump a cassette Into the grey waste point ,

It’s absolutely ridiculous that people can’t have some basic understanding of how things work and can’t be bothered to even ask .

For future reference before going to the expense of replacing the tank (and all pipework and boiler) it's worth trying to clean it out with dishwasher tabs and lots of water.
It may take as many as 8 cycles of filling with water/dishwasher tabs before you notice a difference.

For the sake of 800 litres of water and 2-30 dishwasher tabs it's worth a try.

I'd have had to stifle a giggle, much as I did many years ago when working for Kraft Foods Inc. and our visiting American Vice President - Global Marketing asked me for help after he had failed several times to fax a confidential memo using the photocopier.

Diesel in the water tank will never clean out , if I get it on my cloths & Put them in the washing machine , 3 washes later they still stink 😰. new tank , water heater , taps , shower & pipe work , that MoHo could almost be a rite off

My neighbour's in-laws did that when they borrowed his m/h. We spent several days using several ordinary domestic and dedicated diesel fuel cleaners but never got rid of the taint. A new tank, pump and piping had to be fitted.

Are they still speaking?!

All he's got to do is empty the fresh water tank, complete with diesel, down a stormwater drain, preferably near a river or the sea and then return the motorhome to the hire company. Then he walks away.
That's what some French tourists did in my home town.

Yes, despite 15 years of experience. I did it last year . I got sidetracked on the forecourt. Anyway, only put 15 or so litres in with the water.

Gave the attendant an earful because they were selling those tiny 50p hand cleaners for almost a fiver.

managed to get it home and drain it out.

lots of flushing of the tank worked. I hadn’t ran a tap so that was a bonus

Not diesel but in the same vein as Swifter’s post.
We were on a CS and had to shout at a man who had just emptied his cassette (in the correct place with a dedicated tap close by) he then walked away about 50 yards to the fresh water tap to clean his cassette!
He reckoned he hadn’t seen the tap by the chemical dump! Tap is obvious and has a watering can under it too!
Some people don’t seem to look around themselves any more and have lost their common sense if they ever had any to start with!

Robert, please tell me you waited till he’d filled it and then reminded him to fill the fuel tank with water.

What I don’t understand is why do manufacturers not fit a smaller hole for fresh water, that way you could get a hose in but not a fuel filler.

Many years back I almost did the same. took the cap off and just touched the nozzle on the lip of the water filler. Didn't put a drop in but you could taste the diesel for a couple of tanks.

We helped out on a site in North Wales and near the washing up sinks was a drain in the floor and somebody had emptied the cassette down it and left the mess on the grid.

Oh dear! Don’t think he’ll get far!and his coffee won’t taste very nice!
Maybe he has a water filter and wanted to see how good it was. 😀😀
