Hi and I have looked at various threads about which SatNav is best etc and obviously some say TomTom and some say Garmin or others but my question is if I bought a second hand one say 6-12months old, will I still be able to get the FREE map updates etc for life or is this only available when you buy a new unit?

Many thanks

Paul

No lifetime maPs with garmin. My choice of satnav. New or second hand
Have to differ I'm afraid, my Garmin still updates after 6 years of owning. Do you mean that new Garmins don't now come with lifetime updates?

Personally I would never buy another SatNav as I now prefer to use Google maps via my phone. Although the Garmin is good it is never quite so accurate as Google maps in my opinion.

I've never used Tom Tom, however, Garmin will provide updates as long as they're supporting your particular series of satnav. Having said that, I'm currently using Waze.

I bought a second hand Garmin Camper 660 LMT-D three years ago.

Using my PC, I've successfully updated both the software and maps (for free) on numerous occasions, via Garmin Express.

I bought a second hand Garmin Camper 760LM from a fellow funster, some time ago, re-registered it in my name and have had regular map updates since then.

Gonna disagree with that, I have found several mistakes with Google Maps in the past when checking for traffic updates, which is 'reasonably' accurate.

I currently prefer using a Garmin Camper 760, don’t ask about the built-in Xzent. Have used Waze regularly in car where it is great but not good for motorhome. Waze took me on a nice country route in motorhome to avoid Todmorden but then wanted me to through a 6’ 6” width restriction ! Need to try Magic Earth again, removed it previously as it screwed up a lot of settings.

Paul - we have Tom Tom Camper Max and the updates go with the unit - not the owner. (providing you have Tom Tom account and the unit is logged into your account.

Just noticed you've got two threads running so ..................

You can transfer ownership of a Garmin by registering it on your account and, I believe, this includes map updating but better check directly with Garmin. The seller can deregister the unit on their Garmin account online if they want.

EDIT: this is the weblink for transfer - https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=qNp86op6VD72slwYrvlSo8

Thanks for that as that’s what I needed to know. We have used our google maps on our phone via car play and have been ok but since buying a larger vehicle we know that we need something that we can put in our length/height/width and weight so we don’t get taken down roads that are not suitable for the vehicle and I have noticed that a lot of people say that although Garmin are good but probably made more for the USA TomTom are more suited to our roads and Europe🤷‍♂️ your thoughts and why you decided in a TomTom and your experiences using it the good bad and ugly would be a great help👍
Many thanks

Same experience for me.

I like the Camper model as it lets you put in your vehicle dimensions and adjusts routes accordingly. It also adjusts the speed limit based on vehicle type.

Usually free with Garmin, i have both TT and Garmin as i drive a 44 ton truck. I prefer the Garmin as its a bigger 8 inch screen. The TT you need to subscribe to for Speed Camera updates. This applies both new and used. My Garmin was an Ebay used bargain. I use it with my Camper Van as well as Google Maps on the Uconnect. You can put the Profiles of the Camper in and store them and then just select which vehicle i am in ie Truck or Van.

From experience, sat navs are a bit like owning a mobile phone.

Once you've bought into one make and get used to using the architecture, you’ll find it more difficult to use another make. Hence there are ardent Garmin fans and also ardent Tom Tom fans

That’s useful information and thank you👍 As you use both and I know you said you prefer the Garmin as it’s got a 8inch screen but do you find one or the other is better at directions for suitable roads etc? Is yours the Garmin for motorhomes or a dedicated HGV one?

It also adjusts the speed limit based on vehicle type.
and it works!(y)

When we got our first Camper I put in the actual dimensions but a weight of 7,500kgs (we're 4250kgs) and I ended up shouting at the thing because it was telling me I was over the 40mph limit when the road signs were clearly saying 50mph.:swear2:

Needless to say she got in the "told you so" when I checked the settings again!

Agreed. Borrowed one Tom Tom but couldn't get on with it so back to Garmin.

The key thing I like about Garmin is the planning software you can install on a Windows or Mac machine. We do this and then transfer to sat nav.

100% agree Oldrat.

I got into the Garmin system in the days when a GPS was the size of a house brick - but it was pretty much the only waterproof option on the market, which was an important consideration on a motorbike.

Roll forward 15 or more years and I'm still using one on the bike, an old one in the car and bought the Camper version as it came up at a good price second hand. I used that in my last van for a number of years.

Current van has TomTom built in and I decided I should take the time and effort to learn how to use it. I'll admit that to start with I carried the Garmin in the glove box as a backup but I've got used to it now.

If I'm honest, I still prefer the Garmin, but I don't really know if that's just because I'm used to it or if it's actually any better in reality.

Yes I agree but I find the amount of errors and inaccurate routes worse on my Garmin than Google maps. I don't think any device could ever be totally up to date and 100% accurate.

Map updates, whilst desirable aren't always 'life and death'. I've got an old TomTomGo with maps that pre-date the A75 autoroute(2010). I still use it occasionally in OH's car quite successfully.
