Totally new to motor homing - but very eager to learn! :)
Hi folks! Well, I'm well into my travels, having left UK in early May and have so far been to France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and currently in Romania. All such beautiful countries. But I digress...

What I would like to know is how do I enter the co-ordinates into my satnav?? There is a whole list of types of co-ordinates, Swiss, Icelandic, Indian, etc. When I find a campsite, they usually have the coordinates and I've tried every single selection on my Garmin but they never match up.

I think the coordinates would be much more precise in finding places as I have come across dead-end streets, motorways and fields when I put in the address! Any ideas??

The other popular version is Decimal eg, 1.23456 6.78910
thanks, I'll try that when I'm on the move again.

There are various apps/websites that will convert different types of co-ords to whatever you want. DD to GPS and vice versa.

There are at least three different formats for lat and long.

Degrees, minutes and seconds which look like: N45° 15'. 35"
Decimal degrees: N45.25467°
Degrees and decimal minutes: N45° 15.55'

The easiest solution will be to change the format in your satnav to whatever format your site reference is using.

You may also find you can use whatever app you have to route you directly to the destination although it will use Google Maps.

This is what I do, haven't used a GPS for several years but we are not in a big MH. You can't set vehicle dimensions in Google Maps.

Not so new now
If you use Serach for Sites, you can use their website to download all of their site data I.e. the “S” numbers Sat Nav Quick search ID’s in CSV format for Garmin sat Navs. You can then upload that data to your unit and use the quick search.
We’ve used it in the UK, France and Spain and it’s been very accurate.

We use decimal on our Tom Tom, copy and paste from SFS, Google maps etc into my drive app which then synchronise over the ether and send it to sat nav unit.

Jacqo My Tom Tom has all the choices DBK speaks of in the menu settings. Being an old navigator tend to default to degrees minutes seconds but when I want to enter a decimal reading I just change the settings, I think, or perhaps it just recognises the change of format automatically. Can’t remember now 😜

I’d have thought the Garmin would have the same ability.

If you really need to convert and you don't have a website to hand, it's just a case of multiplying or dividing by 60.

E.g. N54.842668

Multiply the decimal bit by 60 to get minutes:
0.842668 x 60 = 50.56008 minutes

And again if you need seconds:
0.56008 x 60 = 33.6 seconds

It'd be good if everyone agreed on the same format. But nevermind.

And the opposite to convert degrees, minutes and seconds to decimal degrees.

Eg N54 degrees, 50 minutes, 33.6 seconds

Divide seconds by 60 to get minutes
33.6 ÷ 60 = 0.56 minutes

Add to the other minutes
50 + 0.56 = 50.56 minutes

Divide minutes by 60 to get degrees
50.56 ÷ 60 = 0.842667 degrees.

Add to other degrees
54 + 0.842667 = 54.842667 decimal degrees
Count your blessings, at least nobody uses radians or grads

So that's the reason. I've never had a problem with cordinates until this year i'm using Search For Sites and the just don't fit.

thanks.. I've now sorted out using bluetooth so the site uploads directly to the Garmin and I've away!

Not sure... there are a lot of options listing named country settings but it's all good now as I've sorted out the Bluetooth and it just uploads the address to the Garmin.
