I am just pulling the outline together for a planned trip to Sardinia and Corsica and just wondered if those that have been considered this a sensible option. Travel to Sardinia overnight on ferry from Toulon, Sardinia to Corsica and then Corsica to Livorno, back home. For some reason the 50 min ferry between Sardinia and Corsica is more expensive than the longer trip to Livorno, guess simple supply and demand. My intention is to have the plan in place for last minute travel if an a break pops up in our diary, leaving a mass internet booking exercise just before set off or my wife booking on the run as I travel (supposed to have all the time in the world after retirement!)

Thanks. Interesting, starting to realise how many options there are.

What about Corsica to Nice, then up either through France or if your catching the ferry back from Belgium or Holland maybe take in Switzerland ?

Here is a booklet I assembled from some data I acquired on the web, not my observations but another's.

Would be very nice, however, my visit isn't a family holiday as such, it is a field trip to visit some very specific archaeological sites on the islands and therefore it will have to be by the quickest route possible, tunnel, toll roads etc. I will be going solo (not everyone's cup of tea, plus not very exciting for the passenger if too much driving) and so do not like to be away from home for too long. Fly drive is the easiest and cheapest, however, I have come to love solo road trips in the van and it means I can carry any gear I need plus clothing for all weathers and of course stop where I want within reason. I will look at Nice as a departure point though.

We found that ferries from Italy were much cheaper than ferries from France. I would also suggest that you could get there via luxemburg, germany swiss, genoa cheaper and faster than going via nice.

Thanks for all the help, narrowed my options down to 2 (Genoa and Toulon suit my particular needs). A fairly basic question, are the two faster roads to Genoa through either the Mont Blanc or Frejus tunnel always open in winter or can they be affected by snow and ice. I notice the cost and timings of either route is similar and so would pick which ever one flowed best in winter. A google of the routes include all sorts of dire warnings from some sections right through to never been a issue and used it numerous times from others. As usual, such a wide variation in opinions leaves you none the wiser.
