There’s a few older threads on this but nothing too recent apart from a recommendation of Camping Igueldo, it sounds decent enough from the thread on MHF but their website doesn’t really reveal anything…

Ideally was looking for something closer to the beach but don’t mind being further out of town, sand is cheaper than the shops 😂

Many Thanks

:thanks3:

We stayed on the aire in the town a few months ago. Easy walk to beaches and maybe 30 mins walk to old town, but plenty of bars along the way if you get thirsty! Basic parking with water and drainage but only 3 Euro.

It's popular so you need to get there mid / late morning for the best chance of getting a spot.

We were there for the town life so it suited us.

We stayed in the stadium Aire last month, it's free and a ten minute walk into town, perhaps 20 to the beach. Don't go on match days it's rammed.

We stopped on Camping Orio (ACSI site) last year, again not in San Sebastian, but a pleasant site (at least out of high season ) and very close to an excellent beach. The sea is very “dumpy” so not easy for swimming.
About a mile from station so you could get to SS easily by train.
We have stayed on Igueldo in the past - easy enough bus ride down to the city.

That one is looking quite promising !

sallylillian can you remember how long the walk was down to the beach, steep i suppose ? Looks like 2km on the road but seems to be a shorter footpath route ?
There is a set of steps down to the beach and a boardwalk and path into town. I presume you are fit as there are quite a few steps. I did have a picture of the steps from the beach up to the site but cannot find it. Michael

Ok thanks so much for that. So something like a 15mins stumble then ?

We stayed on the aire in the city for a couple of nights in autumn 2021. Relatively quiet area close to the university. As others have said, can get full.

San Sebastian is a fantastic city. Superb setting, great bars in the old town. It's just fun to walk around. On the Sunday, the whole city seems to come out to walk along the seafront prom. Great for people watching!

Agree, and it is the Tapas aficionados Paradise!

We have used Orio twice, second the comment that it is a nice site next to a good beach. Easy trip into SS on the train ( about 20 mins) although the self serve ticket machine is a bit tricky to navigate. Site is busy at weekends with spanish folk, how dare they !!!

its quite a climb down and back to the beach at Zarautz, the other disappointing point is that the heavy tree cover makes it surprisingly difficult to get a view. Igueldo is even worse because its even further from the beach road is bad and still no view , we scootered up and down ( mad people do cycle) or there's a regular bus.

my advice, unless you have a scooter then use the aire to visit San Sebastian then go further along the coast for beaches

This makes sense, maybe we’ll split some days between beach and town and find the sites according to that.

We stayed at the site by the university and easy bus into the city (can’t remember the bus number sorry)

I'm guessing you mean the Aire, thats where we tend to stay, ASFAIK its the closest place to the city although some people reckon they stay on the Passeo Berria by the seafront in the winter.

Yes I meant aire . Sorry for the confusion

You'll need some Vaseline for the sides of your van if on the aire.
I didn't find the Aire at San Sebastian too bad space wise. Been on a lot more cramped Aires. The one just over the border back into France at St Jean de Luz is probably as tight as any that I can remember. You'd need vaseline to get in and out of there, plus earplugs for the train station and incessant bing-bong announcements! 😀

We’ve just booked 2 nights here for the beginning of September so 🤞🏼

Also did Camping Orio with easy train into San Sebastián, worked out well and nice site. No dogs I recall?

Need to check about the dogs at Orio then. Quite few in that area seem to be no dogs😔

I can put whiskers on them and ask them to meow, might work🐈

A bit of feedback on Gran Camping Zarautz and the town:

  • overall nice site
  • well positioned at the top of the hill (yep at the end of the 473 steps, we counted them…)
  • a very active surfing scene going on in Zarautz
  • site itself as someone else pointed out has limited views down to the beach and town unless you walk out a bit
  • fairly tight pitches although we luckily ended up on a double pitch as we had booked ahead

Now sat in the aire at San Sebastián so the girls can catch up on some shopping before we head up to Biscarosse.

Love the bars, tapas, old town, and general laid back vibe in San Sebastian. It's a brilliant city. Enjoy your stay.
