A bit. First you need to put the number on retention and fit new plates to the vehicle. The DVLA will usually reallocate the original VRM and send you a new V5
You can sell the number via one of the many companies or sell it privately. The process is on your retention certificate IIRC.

Plate Trader is a specialist online market place (bit like ebay for number plates) which gets pretty good reviews.
Quite a different type of operation to most number plate dealers.
You list your plate and the cost and deal directly with buyers, negotiating the finally agreed price.
I've used them for a couple of valuations and they struck me as OK.
