Saga massive renewal hike. Why?

We was with Saga for years, they always increased the premium and give new customers the discount, we found the hassle phoning and moaning only last that call, and next year it horrendous again, so moved on to Safeguard and never got all the junk mail that Saga sent us. šŸ˜ Bob.
I get the horrendously expensive quotes for cars I no longer own from years ago from Saga.

I'm getting quotes of Ā£250 ish.
Unbelievable.
If Saga had been less greedy, I would have stayed with them
It's called "inertia renewal" in the insurance world, an amazing number of policyholders just don't bother to shop around.

I received a renewal notice from Saga which I thought was a bit high so I went on Compare the Market, Saga came out about Ā£60 cheaper near the rop of the list of recommendations so I went with that. Once the new policy was in place I cancelled the old one. It's worth a try when people get their renewal notices as the Saga computer system obviously doesn't pick up the fact that you are already insured with them when you use a comparison website

Just receive a renewal letter from Saga. Last year was Ā£420. This year is Ā£620!!

We have been with them for three years and have only seen cost increase in line with inflation. We haven't hit anyone, haven't made a claim, haven't increased our mileage, haven't replaced the chrome taps for gold.

I have heard that Saga won't reduce the price when you ring up. Is this the case?

Is there a list of other insurers that we could try, because Ā£620 is ridiculous and they can eff off.
Comfort insurance

With the changes this year , more people will be going to places like Croatia, Bulgaria, Morocco, even Turkey; its worth checking what the standard territorial limits are ( many exclude Croatia from comprehensive cover) and what the possibilities of getting a green card for places on your list are and at what cost.

Yet another for Comfort , been with them with Autotrail Apache, Adria Twin 600, now Elddis CV20, always came up best price with good level of cover with UK and Europe breakdown / recovery.

I am amazed people still use them. I stopped many years ago when I found other companies far cheaper. Just get some online quotes, before you pay those robbers. They rely on people believing their propaganda about catering for us old folk.

Saga quoted me Ā£128 for my car and Ā£680 for my motorhome Pete best quoted me Ā£320 with lv guess where I went
If only he'd stayed with Beatles, he could have retired years ago. I'll get me coat. šŸ˜

I donā€™t even phone them to haggle if they send me a quote like that. Just go elsewhere. If itā€™s an auto renew I get new cover then phone to cancel auto renew. If they say theyā€™ll have another look I tell them I assume they have already sent me their most competitive quote and Iā€™ve already renewed. Too many firms simply hope you wonā€™t check and screw you for extra money!

I went with Comfort.....werenā€™t the cheapest but competitive and good reviews and good level of cover seemed to give best overall deal.
Another vote for Comfort - they beat A-Plan last year by about 10% and their Ā£280 on our original van was a bit of an improvement on CAMC's Ā£3,400 (yes, Ā£3,400)
Auto renewing is now banned by the FCA
The dual pricing is also banned now and insurers cannot charge renewal customers more than new business rates. It is expected though that new business rates will increase as the market levels

Just to clarify the 'ban' doesn't come into force until the new year so at present taking out a new policy rather than renewing could still be cheaper if your premiums are normally high so check before the ban comes into place and if it works out a better price after paying a cancellation fee on your existing policy you might as well do it.

Apparently there is a sweet spot for getting quotes.

Itā€™s around 20 days before renewal.

I was with ā€œLifesureā€. Got cash back when I sold my van

Donā€™t forget the 23 day rule

A lot of it depends on when you obtain the quotes. If you leave it late the premiums are more expensive. Around three weeks before renewal is supposed to be the optimum time.
Err, who did you work for who did that? Most decent insurers use the same algorithm all year round!

I must be using a different Saga to some here. All I do is as soon as the quote comes in find the cheapest equivalent elsewhere then call them and they have never failed to be cheapest over many years.
I also know more importantly their claim department were brilliant when someone clipped us what is not to like.
Marketing I simply opted out and never get any.

Read the MSE link I posted above, the closer you get to the renewal the higher your premium.

Itā€™s sad that many of their customers are probably older so arenā€™t computer savvy enough to shop around.

My mother was insured with Age Concern and they were eye-wateringly expensive!

Grove and Dean have been and still are best for us - price and service. Mechanical breakdown last year and dealt with brilliantly. I did shop around for this year - Saga wanted double that of anywhere else.

But did you know that if a client has been with the same insurer or broker for 4 years or more for home and motor insurance, the provider has to include prominent advice that if the buyer shops around, they may get a cheaper price

Personally if they try to take the mick out of me like that I just go to someone else anyway. If they want me to jump through hoops to get a decent quote they can do one!

I don't trust the morals of a company that do that. I think Saga prey on an older, less savvy customer base.

Hi I change my insurance every year, gone with the NFU look around thereā€™s lots around, also there are a lot of companies who will bye your exces mine was Ā£450 and it cost Ā£30 to cover it so if I have a problem I will have nothing to pay

Sorry but itā€™s true

Aib Southampton for a fulltimers policy.

We've been with SAGA for 5 years, they may not be the absolute cheapest, but sometimes cheapest isn't always best. Always check each renewal and always stay with SAGA, they give real cover for A class windscreens too.

Saga were one of the last to offer free green card for Morocco. With circa Ā£300 cover for a class

I've been with aib for a few years always competing prices i was happy to pay a small premium not to shop around.BUt this year they are way over the top and I'm going elsewhere i will let them know why and hope they can be more competive on the other two vehicles i insure with them

Was with Comfort, and their renewal premium was competitive. However they wouldn't offer any cover for Morocco or Turkey, whereas Saga would. They were a bit more expensive, but not by a massive amount.
