Time to renew our insurance and breakdown cover with Saga. We had paid extra for a three year guarantee that premiums wouldn't rise and they didnt, in fact they went down a bit. However what they failed to mention in any of the renewal information they sent us was that the breakdown cover they had included in the premium would no longer cover us. The breakdown cover would be via the RAC. It was only by going online and checking the RAC booklet that we discovered they had a 3.5 weight limit, 7 m length 3m height all of which would exclude our Autotrail Scout.
We phoned Saga and they said that the three year guarantee covered only the premium and that they could change the terms and conditions and it was the RAC that had changed the cover. They agreed that the renewal info didn't tell us about the change in breakdown cover and have sent us £15 for our trouble.
It was only because my husband remembered reading somewhere about the RAC no longer recovering motorhomes over 3.5 that we went in search of the RAC conditions. We came very close to renewing a policy thinking it offered the same level of cover as it did this year. Saga were prepared to sell us breakdown cover knowing that it would not cover us in the event of a breakdown.

Saga are very good at changing policy at renewal time, they often change underwriters and you get a different policy.
I had a problem with house insurance after renewal, they had changed the cover on our e-bikes to UK only, wanted to double the premium for the same cover as the previous year. They did give me a full refund for the 3 months I'd had the policy.

If you have RAC Arrival Cover via C&CC and have had uninterrupted for several years you are a legacy member and are still covered any weight, height, length plus trailer. I read the small print this year and made a fuss, still waiting for it in writing though

angiep. I was very interested to read of your experiences re breakdown cover with Saga, so much so that I took up the subject with them on Saturday morning. It was confirmed then that yes, had we broken down in the middle of our German trip last month, we wouldn't have been covered. We were both shocked and amazed at the fact that a pair of (near) pensioners could have been left stranded, knowing that they had made proper provision to cover possible eventualities with the MH. :whatthe:

Saga accepted responsibility and offered to refund the cost of the breakdown element. I totally refused the offer, on the grounds that we only took out the Saga MH policy, based on the level of breakdown/repatriation cover for our 8.5m, 6.85 tonne MH, and therefore in my opinion, we were mis-sold the policy. I explained that I wanted the case escalating, and would be looking at a complete policy refund. This wasn't well received, and I was informed that I would receive a return call on Monday, (today).

As I wasn't instilled with confidence, I emailed Saga's CEO yesterday explaining the situation, and seeking his intervention.
Whilst not receiving a reply from the CEO, I did receive a call from one of Saga's operatives about an hour ago, assuring me that the breakdown and vehicle aspect of their MH policy, covers any size and weight of vehicle, and is not in line with the RAC's lower level of cover for MHs.
I have asked for written confirmation to that effect, which I am assured will be forthcoming, over the next couple of days.

They have also agreed to re word their policy document, to remove any doubt as to the cover supplied for MHs, under their provider, the RAC.

So, in conclusion, anyone else with Saga who is worried about their level of breakdown/repatriation cover, needs to get in touch with them, despite what your policy documents list as levels of cover.

I think I am right in saying that customers of the Nationwide, have had similar doubts about their cover, since the NW recently changed their breakdown provider, from the AA to Britannia Rescue.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Thanks for the info, we are with Saga, so will be in touch with them

Yes I got your point but this was a very bad move by Nationwide
