When we turned our gas on yesterday, using a Safefill 11kg bottle, there was a smell of gas. Tested as best as I could for leakage but no real evidence. I swapped connection to a 6kg Calor bottle and no smell at all.

I therefore wonder whether because Safefill bottle is taller does it compromise the connection in anyway?

Shortly afterwards I used Safefill bottle, away from van for BBQ but thought there was a slight smell of gas but nothing as strong as above.

So not sure what to do about Safefill bottle, will ring supplier when I get home.

Anyone else using Safefill bottles, or taller bottles have similar problems. Or any thoughts welcome.

I will buy a gas leakage tester when I get home.

soapy bubbles are a simple way of testing. not soapy water, but the bubbles themselves smeared over joints.

Are you using a rubber tip thumbscrew pig tail or a spanner brass type?

In the old days when we repaired our own punctures (how old does that make me? :giggle: ) we used to submerge the tube in water to find the bubbles. Perhaps, if you haven't got any of the above recommendation to hand, you might try that......... but, you say it only leaks when attached to something, so might be too difficult?

The leak detector spray is cheap and obtainable from toolstation or screwfix. Use soap bubbles as an alternative until you buy the proper stuff..its worth it for peace of mind alone.

Just light a match.
Be careful about starting a conversation about stoichiometric mixtures and air to fuel ratios for combustion to be able to occur ...

Do you ever notice if you are nearing the last gas in the cylinder, it smells strongly as it burns? The tailings in the bottle have a stronger concentration of mercaptan which is added for safety reasons, along with oils and LPG byproducts

Still have at least quarter of bottle left.
