Hi.
I'm new to the forum so I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, please forgive me if it isn't.
Mum and dad will be coming over from France in the next few weeks. Previously they've used the ferry into Hull but they're not happy with the ferry company any more so they're going to try our preferred run which is the Dieppe - Newhaven route. Trouble is, Dad's over 70 and not looking forward to the hellish (by comparison) roads of the UK (the M25 in particular) and the long haul to get to Leeds.
He needs frequent breaks and a bit of shut-eye on long journeys (he'll only get 4 hours kip on the boat) and there's nothing resembling the French Aires over here so I'm asking if any of you know of suitable pull-ins he might use?
We did the run last week and saw a couple of lay-bys on the A26 not far past Newhaven but as we whizzed past I couldn't tell if they'd got any restrictive signs on them saying that someone would have your guts for garters if you dared stop and use them for anything but the most dire emergency! We had to see friends on the M1 side of Bedford so came north that way instead of our usual picturesque drive up the A1 (never again! not a bacon butty van or a truckers tea anywhere up that awful road. C***a Coffee!? At every services?? Blergh!) but again, where is 'legal' on the A1 for a prolonged stop?
Another 20 years and hubby and I will be facing the same dilemma; how do you drive long distance in this country and stay alert and safe on the roads if there isn't somewhere en route to pull up, brew up and catch 40 winks (for free) without upsetting the local councils or Highways departments?
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Jane
