A fairly balanced view in my opinion but you may disagree.

it might be the lack of planning here ?
Hi.
Nuclear ? NO. Fracking ? NO. River Seven Barrier/turbines.? NO. " Clean burning Coal Furnaces..... Juries out on that.
I think the Planning is there, but its thwarted by the " What Ifs ? " ( Phrase used a lot by Ray Moore BBC Radio two early morning DJ...RIP )
Wind Farms................. Only work when the wind blows...... Well,Dang my Britches, who would have thought that, back to the drawing board.
EU. In the Grand scheme of things. I believe it was Alledged that Germany was getting a discount on the Gas destined for the EU.

I think if the tables were turned its quite likely we would use the supply to our advantage. I think Norway have managed their oil and gas reserves on the basis that they would become more valuable over time rather than short term economic benefit like we did with ours. I think all politicians of all parties have had a chance to put in place long term energy planning but were more interested in short term effects to win the next election. If we're getting our gas from Europe and we've left the EU presumably they are free to charge what they consider a market rate for the transfer through their countries.

Hi.
But surely ALL of the EU countries should have paid the same rate. Am i missing something here ?.

I think Germany backed themselves into a corner when they banned any new Nuclear power stations.
I guess they are hoping Russian will be a pal, be nice and forget their past history.
I really do doubt it, Russia is not known for being reasonable and compassionate

Agreed about the stupid decision to close Germany's nuclear plants after Fukushima. Own goal by Merkel.

Nord stream 2 is a 2nd direct gas pipeline from Russia to the EU, bypassing Ukraine or Belarus either of which could hold the EU to ransom or demand unreasonable transit charges. In addition Ukraine is notorious for refusing to pay for Russian gas (or stealing it - who knows) which caused Russia to shut off the gas supply to Ukraine as stated in the video above, and in turn cut off the EU for a short while. Nord stream 1 is operating, and Nord stream 2 is ready to go online, but I understand the regulatory approval at the EU end is being delayed although testing is complete.

The USA has been trying for years to prevent Nord stream 2 from being built at all, because the USA wants to drive a wedge between the EU and Russia for geopolitical reasons. Silly games. The Americans don't care if Europeans freeze and meanwhile the USA has very low gas prices thanks to fracking. A case of I'm all right Jack.

The UK is right at the end of the Russian gas supply pipeline, so that leaves us as the most vulnerable customer if other countries are protecting their own interests along the route. This puts the spotlight on the UK's woeful lack of reserve LNG storage (unlike most other countries) and decision to allow the only major storage facility we have to be decommissioned so the private owners can save money. How ridiculous and short-sighted. Can we please have proper adults in charge of our energy policy? Better still, nationalise the whole shebang and put engineers in charge instead of hedge funds.
