Round 3 pin socket, what is it??

I have an old Auto trail (1988) and have this curious
beast next to a 'normal' UK spec single socket.
Could anyone give me advice on what it is / does.
Looks like a standard socket, however the pins are
round, and are closer together.

I think it's an old fashioned 12v socket. I used to have a couple of adaptors with the round 3 pin one end & a cigar lighter socket on the other.

That looks like a 5A mains socket.

They look old fashioned but they are also used in modern wiring as we have several of them put in when our house was rewired a couple of months ago to run table/standard lamps that are switched from a wall switch.

I suggest you don't plug in any 12v appliances till you check they havent got the mains on them :stopsign:

thats why i asked if those were the ones.
someone may have been on the cheap using one as a 12v socket.

Yes it does look exactly the same as that! (apart from the screws
to hold it onto the patress are top and bottom).

UPDATE:
it is 12v supply, not using the 'bigger' pin contact.
looks as if it was done at the factory, well the wiring
at least. Think it has to go mind! Does anyone use 12v
sockets/plugs as fixed equipment on here? Just trying
to 'justify' its existance really as it has another socket (12v)
above it by 1.5ft but with a DIN fitment.

certainly ugly in a motorhome but what will you replace it with ?
i dont think the factory would fit it and a modern 12v socket above it.
chances are a previous owner has fitted it in place of the original.

you could buy a modern, made for purpose 2 blade socket, otherwise it will be a blank plate which will look even worse.

personally id fit a modern one as you never know when you may need a second supply...ie: tv AND digi/sat box when off hookup.
