Does/Has anyone done the driving coarse and have membership of this organisation? I am getting to the stage that insurance companies will be looking at premiums owing to age and was thinking that this might be a way of reassurance as to my competence to drive. If anyone is a member are the benefits worthwhile ?

Thanks Funsters in advance for your thoughts.

Insurance premiums are generally at their lowest when you are in your 50s and early 60s, recognising experience and maturity (as reflected in lower claim rates).

They can start rising after this, but not because one lacks the skills one had a few years earlier. It's due to aging - slowing down, poorer eyesight and so on.

That's also why non-grandfathered C1 drivers need 5-yearly medicals from the age of 45, and then annually from 65.

So I suspect that such a course will do relatively little to counteract the reasons for premium increases.

I have IAM and Rospa for motorcycles.
AFAIK only the IAM gives a discount (which is odd as ROSPA needs repeating every 3 years and IMO is a more rigorous test)

Irrespective of discount, I found them useful and enjoyable.

IAM car
RoSPA bike

100% worth doing, not for discounts, but for training.

(Only difference due to location of trainers, will likely do RoSPA car when I get time - we were doing it before covid...)

I too have IAM quals. I found that the discount it gave me were for the more expensive companies which still worked out more than most others without discount.
Agreed that the course is great to do for the skills you learn

Become a member, join a local group who will allocate you a mentor to assess your existing skill level and provide a development plan. Once you have gathered some expertise you can work towards a test, or just enjoy the learning process and social activities with the group.
I have to say it is worth it as I am an examiner!
I have taken many out who have admitted to a real eye-opening experience, never realising how mediocre their normal driving was. If you don't fancy the rigours of an advanced driving test there is an option to do a driver review, no test involved just a comprehensive assessment of skill and safety behind the wheel.

For less than £80 you may find it quite enjoyable, give it a go.

I've a friend with IAM and class1 HGV who is 80 YO and still gets screwed on his insurance. He drives the massive article for Royal Mail. His car insurance is still ridiculous.
