Hi all,

can anyone give me the benefits of either of these?

Which one is likely the best option?

Are they an easy install or is it worth getting a professional to ruin my roof?!!!

<Broken link removed>

Oh and my family are extremely heavy internet users!

Many thanks

Paul

There are cheaper options you could buy a Poynting puck antenna and a Huwei at a lot less cost and install it yourself Lenny HB did a thread on how.

try DBK and Lenny HB they both have set ups that seem very effective.

i have a Huawei Mifi and a puck that i put through the roof light when i need it. but both these have installed setups

i wanted to test the set up before drilling holes in my roof :sneaky:

That's a lot of cash to do not much more than a £50 Huawei and a £40 cantenna.

Motorhome WiFi is working for us, in Germany with Vodafone 100gb sim, streams radio 2 to the head unit with no drop outs or buffering, RUNS Avtex connected series smart TV in HD if you want to gobble data at about 1.5gb/ hour otherwise standard works a treat at about 0.8gb/hr, we can browse on an iPad and MacBook at the same time as TV streaming.

Do you find it gives a better reception than the mifi on it`s own ?

We have a roof mounted antenna from Motorhome wi fit but don’t get any better signal than the Huwaei used on its own, my phone got a much better speed with the SIM card swapped into it.

I am not saying it is no good but I seem to do better tethering to my phone.

I’ve got a Huwaei unit and without the antenna powered I get zero signal at my house, with the antenna powered up, I get 4bar and 4g signal. With, without the antenna is a massive difference. That is with Vodafone, but was very similar story with three sim

Mine was a three sim

One of the biggest benefits beyond improved signal strength is that all our devices (2x phones, 1x iPad, 1x laptop) use the same unlimited £20 (inc. roaming) data sim

That's my reasoning. Add to that and xbox and an apple TV and I'm burning 10-20gb a day without breaking into a sweat!!

One small word of caution is that if you have any data limits on your contract, most devices seem to have a 'only use wifi' type option but these devices see the modem as WiFi so can hoover up your mobile data when you're not looking.

Right, I've (as usual) kicked the Ar** out of it and bought:

Amazon product ASIN B017DAJIS4
and sorted an unlimited data sim from EE

couple that with the fire stick 4k i just got on prime day and an xbox i think ill be sorted!!

if this doesn't work ill get a permanent external roof doofer!!

goood choices... one watch out; the data will only be unlimited in the UK..

yeah Ill probably buy a PAYG sim from whichever country we happen to be in. Although we will mostly be around the UK anyways for the next few years until the kids decide its time to move on

Assume you have an inverter to drive the PSU

Can I ask which antenna do you have?

Sorry, too lazy (or trying to be clever).
Power Supply Unit.
I don't think the Teltonika runs off 12V DC
Ahh, I get you, sorry was being a bit mince there for a minute. I have an inverter and apparently it runs from 9-30v

I have just spent several headaches of time researching this :unsure:o_O, taking into account advice from here and other sources and ordered the following: Poynton Puck (doofer) £48 - it is reported to be 5 times better than a phone signal - useful in the out of the way places we like to visit. An Eightwood Antenna SMA to TS9 short connector cable £8 to connect it to the mifi unit. The first mistake was buying a E5577 Huawei battery powered 12 volt router which did not have the external aerial points. Lots of models do not. I then bought a Huawei E5577C that does for £62. Yes same model number, different suffix, be warned . Mobile data wise, we bought a years contract sim from Sky. Good value and my wife can transfer her built up piggy bank of data from her I Phone deal with Sky to the sim to use.

We love our Amazon Alexa set up at home, so also bought a 3rd generation Echo Spot which runs off 12 volt. It hasn't got a battery and so needs a stable 12 volt supply. This was not easy to get to the bottom of. But the consensus of opinions appeared to be that in order to obtain a consistent 12 volt supply, use a usual car cigarette usb type adapter which reduces it to 5 volt, then use a small 5v to 12v thingymejob for £9 from Amazon. Also bought a no screw stick on holder to stop it moving around.

Sorry I haven't fitted it all up yet, so I can confirm it all works well. But wanted to share what I had found out so far, to save members time.

My Bailey 2016 AA740 had a satellite system at some stage, the cable of which comes into an area above the microwave. I plan to use this hole for the puck come doofer. I will report back when all done.

Wish me luck :giggle:

We had the Motorhome WiFi fitted by the dealer as part of our deal.

Couple of weeks ago I got talking to a couple on a site in Cromer. They couldn’t get a phone signal on the site and didn’t want to pay for the WiFi. We had no problem watching TV via our iPads etc.

We’re using Smarty at £10 for 30gb a month, which you can stop / start on a monthly basis. On top of that, if needed, I’ve got 30gb a month on my phone (£10 from Three) and my wife has got 12gb a month on her phone (£8 from Three). More than enough for our useage really, but until we’ve done an EU long trip we won’t know. (y)

Good luck Dave !!!

Another vote for motorhome WiFi set up (y)
