Hi all
Looking for a scenic trip in Germany and came across the romantic road.
Has anyone travelled this route and is it worth doing?
Thinking of crossing into Holland and driving through Germany returning poss Switzerland France
Looking for other routes
Any advice pucs would be nice

Quite a few on here have done it. We’ve done some of it ourselves. The towns are pretty and the setelplatz superb. The Mosel is a good trip too.

We combined the two a couple of years ago, and do a travelogue if you are interested it’s below.

We crossed Harwich to Hook of Holland making Luxembourg our first stop for a couple of nights before slowly working our way south on the Romantic Road.
It will depend how much time you have as to how far you go but we have added the Black Forest area once and as suggested come back up the Mossel.
The site at the junction of the Rhine and Mossel at Koblenz is another stop off we have used both ways.

Definitely worth doing. I would suggest you did the Moselle valley from Trier to Koblenz at the same time. That should keep you going for a few weeks.

If you do the lovely Moselle, try a little detour into the Vulkan-Eifel area. Absolutely stunning and unique.

We did the Romantic Road last September. Really enjoyed it. First experience of Germany. Roads in really great condition. We drove Calais, Belgium, Romantic Road. Lake Constance, Black Forest, France. It was very cold in southern section at altitude. Very easy camping, driving and plenty to see.

There are many scenic or holiday routes in Germany, might be worth trying a few others while you're there. The website below shows most of them but if your German is ok theres loads of info out there, try a search on 'Deutsche Ferienstrasse' (German holiday routes) and do a google translate..

There’s a dedicated web site for this and they have a stop planner on there advising stops worthy of arranging. We are off in May via Le Shuttle , stop near Mons, 2n Koln then down to Wurzburg, drive the RR down to Fussen , Triburg via Lake Constance , then back to Mons via Strasbourg to get the dogs tapeworm treatment done before heading for Calais.

We are there at the moment actually, 2 - 3 weeks travelling the Alpenstrasse from Lake Constance In the east to Berchtesgaden in the West and the route includes some of the southern reaches of the Romantic Road. Done this a couple of times before and previously we have headed back up north taking in Munich and the northern part of the Romantic Road to include Rothenburg. It’s a fabulous winter trip - easy driving, lots of interesting places and really easy to find somewhere to stopover. Great for whatever takes your fancy - wellness spas along the route, winter sports, leisurely walking or taking in some culture. More than happy to share info if anyone wants to direct message me.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most picturesque and unspoilt towns in Germany. Take the Night Wachmans walking tour and find out why. On the way back Lake Constance (Bodensee) is worth a few days. The Zeppelin museum in Friederichshaven is worth a look. Just up the lakeside Campingplatz Alpenblich is on the Bodensee cycle path and a short walk into Hagnau am Bodensee. There you can get an inexpensive ferry ride across to Konstanz and add a country to the trip without the expense of driving on Swiss roads. The local wine is also superb. I recommend to make a reservation on campgrounds when travelling during summer. Infrastructure is very good here in Germany but pressure is high on these places. The same holds for restaurants. In Mosel valley, for wine tasting look for "Straussenwirtschaft" ... these small producers with tables in their gardens or places even in their kitchen like guest rooms, offering their wine at low prices together with cheese and bread etc.. Enjoy! Greetings from Bonn.

We like wild stop overs with odd camp site for Mrs to redo hair

Is this doable in Germany

We had a bash at it last year en-route for Austria. Whilst it definitely is all excellent, after day 4 we decided is was getting repetitive and cut to Salzburg. But we had limited time.
How many cute English county towns would you visit in one week... ?
IMHO the Alpenstrasse possibly gives more bang for the buck, with regard to having highly varied scenery and towns.

We took the motorhome from the ferry at Meersburg to Konstanz and thence to Schafhaussen to see the Rhinefalls then back across the covered bridge to Gallingen without needing a vignette. The bridge we crossed at Schaffhausen is 3.5T though so no good for the big boys.
