Thinking of heading north via this route , has anyone done it before ? Comments welcome . If not we might skirt the eastern French border

We did a 5 week tour of Germany In April. We headed down the Black Forest and up the Romantic road forming the letter “u”. Don’t worry if at times you are driving of the Raomantic road , you will soon pick it up.
a couple of bits of advice. There are plenty of opportunities to wild camp but spend a few quid on Eire. There are some wonderful ones as you drive down the Mosel, often right next to the river. Wherever you visit make sure you visit Wurzburg. We stayed a couple of nights in a swimMing pool car park with a few others. We swam in their indoor and outdoor pool. The walk in to Wurzburg from here is about 40 minutes. Visit the palace. There is a castle as well but we’ll come back to do that. As for the town, it is an absolute delight. Have fun.

Theres a camp site very close to Wurzberg giving a ten minute walk into the town. We stayed a little further out for €25 but wish we had stayed in Wurzberg even though it would have cost more ...not sure how much more though. It's a camping and caravanning club site aswell I think.

Check out my thread and there's a nice free park up about 30 mins drive away, right on the Romantic Road itself.

We have noticed that all the campsites & aires we have stayed at in Germany have been full by early afternoon. Currently on a site in Saarburg watching people being turned away. Yesterday we tried 4 aires in vinyards before we found a space and that was early afternoon. If there is somewhere specific you want to stay , i would get there early or book.

We stopped at Gengenbach on our way up through Germany. It's about 40 minutes south east of Strasbourg. There a decent Aire ten minutes walk from the town centre across the river. It's beautiful traditional German town and well worth a visit. We found it on Searchforsites.

We aim to get to Aires between 10 and 11am, this often means we get to enjoy lunch out too. It’s rare to find them full this early and you’ll often snag the best slots. Sometimes means you have to leave really early, but thats my best time for driving anyway.

We were passing through in early August around 1 pm and the Aire was probably 2/3 rds full. Based on that it shouldn't be an issue getting on there out of season. Like I said previously it is a lovely walled town like you would imagine. Real chocolate box type scenery.

We were seriously underwhelmed with Wurtzburg.
We spent a day there and moved on.
There are many far better towns and cities in the Romantic route.
Our favourite was Rothemburg od Tauber. (It's the real life set for the Child Catcher scenes in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)
We also like Fussen

We were seriously underwhelmed with Wurtzburg.

We had a great brief stay here, parked right on the river bank. We’d been teetotal for two months and were looking forward to the traditional glass of wine on the old bridge. Glorious sunshine, the wine was super, we had three.

This was the view from the back of the van.
