Yes quite a few companies out there will do insurance from 1 hr .Used a few times when buying our recent van .Peace of mind for you and the owner .No insurance no test drive when selling previous van.

This forum of course……if it’s a practical cure that’s needed!🤪

I think that only covers third party damage not to the vehicle being driven.
Correct.

Also my motorhome insurance although fully comprehensive excludes being able to drive other vehicles 3rd part F & T, unlike my car insurance on fully comp which does. Not sure if its unique to MH insurance.

Edit:

A quick search seems to say this is normal on some policies. Wonder how many people are unaware of this limitation.

I noticed my car insurance doesn’t cover travel abroad anymore. That’s killed the day trips at Christmas 😳

There are lots of subtile changes to policies now, not only are we paying more, but we are getting less. Don't assume that something you had last year will continue on to your renewal. Thats why they say always read your policy documents and certificate of insurance before your 14 day cooling off period.

You are allowed to drive unaccompanied on trade plates and the trader must be properly insured for you to do so.
Yes, but the purpose of trade plates is to remove the need for a VEL for that vehicle. It is impractical for a Trader or garage to apply for a VEL just to test a vehicle, they get through so many.
The trader foes not need to be in the vehicle with you, as long as you are doing a bona fide test tide with a view to a possible purchase.
“a vehicle test or trial for the benefit of a likely buyer. At the time of a potential purchase you can go to any place for a test or trial and return after the test or trial”

The only relationship with insurance is that, at the time of application, the trader must show an “in date” policy. The fact that it expires a week later is of no relevance.

Hope that helps

Just because careful NOT to call it 'testing' as I think there is a clause in the small print saying something like, "use of vehicle for racing or testing, is not included" 🤔

What about if you are selling your motorhome and somebody wants to test drive?

The correct way to do this is for you to purchase insurance for the person to temporarily drive it.

Policies can be purchased for about £25 upwards depending on the length of time you want it for. The reason for this way is that the owner can guaruntee that the vehicle is insured not the other way round where some dodgey cert could be produced.
Secondly, I would then pass the charge on to the buyer. Basically, they Gingernuts on this occassion, views every aspect of the van, agrees to buy it subject to a test drive, pays the insurance fee, drives it, likes it buys it.

I have bought 10 mothorhomes from dealers and privately, I have never once test drove any of them. The private ones, I've heard running and been driven out in, had them moved back and forth but thats it. The dealer ones, I've just bought on the basis that I would be doing a U turn if there were an issue.

My view is it is the habitation side you are buying, the engine side is sort of either or, either fiat, Merc, place here. They all pretty much drive the same and we will all have a preference.

if someone wanted to come round for a test drive to see if they could cope with the size of the van etc, I wouldn't be letting them near it.

Remember even if you are allowed to drive other vehicles third party cover they must be insured in their own right, otherwise you are not covered.

That SHOULD read, Just BE careful, NOT Just BECAUSE careful.
