Rhyl now the worst seaside

Rhyl to me is holidays, right from when I was about 6 in 1950s when I used to go with my uncle and aunty and cousins on the train from our long gone station as my uncle worked on the line.
Then in my teens in vans with sack bags in the back, staying weekends.
Two pleasure grounds, pier with the pavilion where I once met a girl from Oxford and went to see heinz Burt and Arthur askey and stayed with her all week, always wonder what happened to her.
Later with my late wife had our honeymoon there in a brother in-laws caravan, subsequently took our children there, and even had a static caravan there for a year or two.
Yeah loads of pleasant memories of Rhyl.
I know all the bad things that go on there now but can't help having a spot in my heart for the old place.

I visit Rhyl once a year to have the habitation check done at the dealers workshop. I find it Ok to visit for the day as long as it's not raining. If you don't like seagulls, I'd give it a miss! :whistle2:

It’s far from being alone, sadly many of our traditional seaside towns are now shiteholes. Even once fashionable resorts like Bournemouth & Torquay have gone the same way. It’s more profitable to offer rehab than family B&B.

I'm always down there...it's not so bad.and is a great base for visiting other north Wales attractions.
North Wales has a good adrenaline scene going on now too with surf Snowdonia..bouncebelow..the longest zipwire attraction in Europe..karting..velocity 2 (zip world) kite surfing etc.
Plus there are plenty more sedate relaxing places as usual..
They have decent concerts /Giggs on at Rhyl prom outdoors right by the sea.. (I watched madness there) Rhyl air show..and the theatre (seen paul sinha there)
The prom is nice now it's done up and the new Rhyl Sun centre is open.. and not forgetting marine lakes miniature steam railway.
News like this doesn't really help..and being totally honest it's really not as bad as painted. Course do em the back street it's a little run down and pound shops but most town centres in the UK have their problems that way.

No I don't work for the Welsh tourist board..;)

I also have fond memories of childhood holidays in Rhyl and Towyn also when teenagers me and my best mate riding up and down the sea front on our motorbikes.
When I had children of my own we took them to Towyn and Rhyl for some of our holidays before I discovered Cornwall.
I also have a lovely static caravan in Towyn and Pat and I visit lots of different places around the area, I also walk our dog every day on the sea front when we’re there.

John.

Yeah I know Madelys...The old Stones site is ours..(where stones club was)..San Remo..small site right before you go over the railway bridge to the fair.
Behind long bar/knightlys.
Had it a while now..just nice tucked away and go in Frankie & Clare's Cafe for a brekkie on a morning.....luvverly. I've tried em all in Towyn..and you can't beat Clare's brekkie or dinner.

I take the dogs down to llandullas beach meself . sometimes they love the water stream there and a new couple from the valentine pub have just took over "the tides bistro" there...that's bang on too ...Luke and Becky...lovely couple.

Have Edwards taken over the Stones site? and yes Frankie and Clare’s is the best café breakfast around we’ve tried them all.
We’re back at home now for a few days but will return on Friday and see if Morton’s has reopened.

If you think Rhyl is bad try Barry or Portcawl.

It has gone the same way as Margate sadly.
I think Margate reached rock bottom in the early 2000's, it's now quietly on the way up, (to be fair, it had no other direction to go)

Since the Turner opened and Emin started backing local artists, the artists who have been forced out of Hoxton and Shoreditch by gentrification have moved to Margate (after all, it was good enough for Turner then and Emin today). It helps to have the big film crews there, Killing Eve, Empire of Light, Lady in the Van plus load of adverts and soaps.

There are many superb houses in Margate and Ramsgate available at almost sensible prices, (although Broadstairs is almost London prices) there are good schools and London is just about commutable on the HS1 route.

If I was still buying property, the Isle of Thanet would actually be where I'd be looking, specifically Cliftonville, where all those large houses that were built as seaside B&B's in the 1900's and were turned into bedsits in the 1980's would make very desirable family houses or 2-3 bed flats by the 2030's.

I agree.

I used to own some property down there which I regret selling now.

However, I think the Turner gallery is ugly and they really could do more to spruce up the pier.

Rhyl isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but neither are most seaside resort towns. For example, the street that runs parallel with the promenade (light display) at Blackpool is like Beruit. With the limited funds available, I think the local authority at Rhyl is trying its best.

Like most places in the UK it will be on the rise followed by a gradual decline ad infinitum.

yes the small part of it containing 12 vans and the old club, all been revamped and new vans / lodges going on there. Shame they knocked down the club, was ok that was.

the rest of the site (it was owned in 2 halves) is still the same owners
