hi, this morning my reversing camera was working and now it isn't! I've checked all the fuses i can find and nothing is blown. do they just fail like that? any fix suggestions? or where a fuse might be tucked away?
it's just not manually turning on like it normal does.
incidentally the washer water bottle isn't working either. i doubt it's related but thought I'd mention it.

The picture shows the screen, not the camera. Does the IR illumination on the camera come on?

Also is it the washer pump that’s not working?

More info will help a diagnosis.

hi tony, thanks for your reply. its the screen which doesn't show anything, so i don't know if it is a camera or screen fault. i can't check the lights on the camera right now becuase I'm alone so can't stick it in reverse and go look at the camera. the non-camera related reversing lights come on.
yes the washer pump. i don't think it is frozen becuase I've been driving a couple of hours so plenty of time to unfreeze.

The camera doesn’t have a shutter frozen closed does it?
Like the frozen screen wash?🥶
thanks for your reply. i don't know. but it worked when i first started the van this morning when it was at its coldest. then didn't work after driving for a about 90 minutes. which should have also been enough time to unfreeze the screen wash water.

pop phone on floor pointing at the camera, start video, go into cab, put into reverse...

I've known screens that wouldn't work below a certain temperature. If it's below freezing in the cab then maybe see if warming it up is all that's needed.

Screen wash on my car was frozen this morning and therefore not working. It's still got 'summer' screen wash in though, so I'll top it up with a bit of the concentrated stuff.

Could be that both issues are just down to the cold. (y)

Ah! this came in as I typed.

Again, if it's very cold and your screenwash isn't at 'winter' concentrations then it's possible that it's been OK in the tank (larger volume, takes longer to freeze) but it's now frozen in the pipe or even at the nozzle (smaller volume, freezes quicker)

The screen wash pump fuse may have been used as the monitor power supply and may be blown , try turning the ignition on and selecting reverse gear (engine not running) then check the rear camera for signs of life.

Turn the ignition on without starting the vehicle, put it in reverse, go round the back to check.
Is it activated by the reverse light/bulb, is that still working?

And reduced pressure at the point it exits so temperature reduces. GayLussac law if my memory serves me correctly. Water boils at about 70 Celsius at the top of mountains (again if my memory is recalling facts correctly) :cautious:

My memory wouldn't have stretched to remembering the name of the law or the temperature of the the boil, but yes, both of those things ring true with my (limited) understanding (y)

when i do that, the van's reversing lights come on. but no lights come on on the rear view camera.

Gay-Lussac’s law refers to the behaviour of gases, so does not apply to liquids

Just shows the risks of relying on memory from half a century ago or thereabouts!

It is also quite possible that the 3 x video plugs have come loose, more so if there are extension cables. If screen had flickering prior to this it could well point to this being the problem
