Malibu 640
Good Evening All. After a false start I have now been assured that my Malibu 640 is definitely on its way and should be with the dealer in about 2 weeks. As such I need to specify the extras I would like the dealer to fit. I am intending to have an alpine INE-W611D which will give me a DAB radio, Sat Nav and the ability to connect a reversing camera. My question is I can't decide if I should have the standard fit single camera which will be mounted in the brake light or pay the extra and have a dual camera which will be mounted on a separate fitting. I assume one camera gives a close view and the other a more distant view. Any thoughts / experience will be much appreciated.

Dual recording camera is a must have IMO.

Dual lens cameras are really useful. I had a monitor where the rear view mirror should be, showing me the view up the road. This was particularly useful in Europe on city ring roads where the slip roads are stupidly short and on a bend so your mirror is useless. The other lens was set so when I hit reverse, the satnav screen showed me the wide angle view pointing down at my rear bumper.

Thank you. I will speak to the dealer to see if it can be set up to see if it can set up to switch views when put into reverse.

Twin cameras are really useful. In addition to auto switching from a rear view to a downward view when reversing, they can usually be switched whilst driving, enabling you to check bike racks or trailers.

I agree with all above - definately go for the twin lens - Close up good for reversing in tight areas and long distance good for blind spots or keeping an eye on a trailer etc. I use our twin lens all the time

I have the dual cameras too, with the screen set up as though it's a rear view mirror. I was really nervous about driving a big vehicle having never done so before, but the cameras are great. I can't imagine driving without them!

You will need a patch kit if you have steering controls. The Alpine screen is quite small, and the one I had fitted by the dealer wouldn’t update or load maps.

Having sent screen shots to both Alpine and Naviextras, with the procedures I was following, both came to the conclusion that the unit was faulty. Dealer removed it at my request. Unit six was fitted by a Car Audio Specialist, a Pioneer Avec-Z1000DAB. Expensive, but after two years I’m more than happy with it.

The model you‘re looking at is not Motorhome specific.

I have the single camera in the brake light, out of the two the clearer and larger screen of the Pioneer was far better……only my thoughts / experience of course.👍

I've currently got a Sony AX8050 with a nice 9" screen. It gives a much clearer image from the reversing camera than the Xenec head unit that came with the van. But unlike my last van, I've only got a single lens camera. I really miss having the view back up the road on a separate screen.

Note: if you get a dual lens, you want a separate screen. You don't want the 'rear view mirror' view to go to your radio screen because you want it on all the time.

Thank you. I have now specified dual lens and a separate screen for rear view.
