I’m a newbie and lovin’ it.
We are looking at purchasing a Motorhome that could be up to 20 years old. Just out of interest, does anyone have any experience of getting their MH reupholstered?

Is it possible?
Is is hugely expensive?

Sorry for all the questions.

It’s possible, we retrimmed our 1972 VW T2 a few years ago, friends are currently doing their T25.

We've had Careavan do our last two motorhomes. Both been superb jobs. They only work on Motorhomes from Easter to November though (y)

We had ours done about 5/6 years ago and it transformed the interior with new curtains ,wall panels, pelmets, and new foam cushioning, and covers it was all done in one day by Regal furnishing in Ilkeston. I cant remember how much it was exactly but about £1300 and they made a superb job of it.

Regal Upholstery did ours - excellent job and not that far from yourselves in Leicestertshire.

+1 for Regal Upholstery. We had our 2007 Swift done after we decided to keep it rather than change the van. We kept it very similar to the original, actually choosing the fabric/patterns exactly the same as on one of their demonstration suites at the shows, and it was amazing how different it made the van - we didn't think it was very shabby to start with.
Arrived in the afternoon and decided exactly what we wanted together with any other ideas they came up with. Stayed overnight in their compound with electric hookup, then they started at 7.30 am, got the whole lot done by early afternoon, although ours was quite straightforward.

Not the cheapest around but we had seen their work on friends vans and they came well recommended.

Regal fair but not enough attention to detail I found curtain tie backs were left for me to fix plus a few other little niggles. I would have gone back but cost of going up there I got it sorted by local repairer instead.

We used a local upholsterer, did a great job and was a lot cheaper than specialists, and a lot closer.

Probably find you would have to replace foam as well unless seats are comfortable - seats foam seems to get uncomfortable as they age

As above - its not rocket science and most upholsterers are very good.

It would appear that Regal are one preferred option.

Does anyone know if they would be able to just supply removable/washable covers for the cab seats. I don't need a full upholster but additional cover maybe an option for me.

Thanks

Hi we had our motorhome fully re-upholstered and new foams in the lounge seats and headrests. We went to Careavan in September arrived Monday and left Wednesday lunch time. Had electric hook-up, there was a shower and toilet that we had use of during working hours. We are very pleased with the result m/h looks totally refreshed and the price was reasonable.

Sorry for all the questions.

We paid £1800 for our coach built 5 berth Swift Sundance to be reupholstered by Regal. It was a very quick job as they started the work at 7-30 in the morning and handed it back at 3-30 the same afternoon. We had new foam everywhere, including the front seats, all the seats and seat backs reupholstered including the front seats, new scatter cushions and the underneath of the over cab bed covered to match the rest of the upholstery. It was a first class job and over a year later the 'van still looks immaculate. It wasn't cheap, but was a lot less than the highest quote we had of over £3000. We reckon that for £1800 it was first class value for money. They even gave us a very large piece of cloth so we had the matching material just in case we ruined anything in the future.

I got a quote for my old Hymer - which if I keep 5 years I would like to think I buy it a new look sometime soon.

I got a quote from A1 Trimmers which covered one long bench beat and a dinette area that seated 4 - so 6 cushions in total - no new foam - I felt it was OK - and complete with all curtains @ £940.

Now a local place would do the cushions at £200 if I had any fabric that was in stock - it would be more if they ordered in. A caravan place near Skegness would do the same for about £270 - with any choice possible.

The problem then became the curtain which would be £200 to make and approx. £150-200 for the material. Now if I could sew then it would be cheaper but at the point I added the curtains at £350-400 To Make and get Fabric then added the £270 for the upholstery then perhaps I would save £250-300.

Now I know that's a good saving …..and if I shopped around and got fabric cheaper - the curtains were based on £15/20 per metre material and I would need metres 10 metres I could save more.

But I wasn't comfortable taking down the curtain down the drop down bed and the thought of just dropping it off some where - not shop for the materials for the curtains (which really isn't my thing) - and picking it up all done for £250 more suited me a lot better.

I haven't done anything yet but thought I would just share the information I have gathered as ABZSteve asked because one persons reasonable is another persons expensive and vica versa.

Curtains can be made by either yourself or a business as they're no different to those for houses. Habitation upholstery again, any upholstery place should be able to do it.

Its the cab seats that can be more difficult to sort, some non-MH places will be happy to do them especially if there is an existing cover that they can remove and then 'copy' the pattern of, if not then they may not do it or it could prove expensive.

I can understand wanting to replace the foam etc on older MHs as it does lose some of it's structure/support etc over time but if not then I prefer to make my own removable covers and leave the original material in place which gives a double layer of 'protection' - having removable 'over' covers means they can be removed for washing easily.

I always make removable covers for our vehicles as we have dogs so I like to protect the upholstery etc, when we sold our last camper at 3 years the original upholstery was like new.

Does anyone want to share what work they got done, by whom and what was the reasonbable or expensive price? (y)

I think you would be surprised to see how basic motorhome upholstery is.
Super deluxe Burstner captains seats are simply seat covers fastened onto butchered Fiat van seats.

These, originally vinyl, seat covers were recovered in real leather by a local company. Both seats cost less than £400.
