My Motorhome is stored in France. The travel restrictions of COVID have not allowed me to bring the vehicle back to the up for an mot. Without the mot I can’t tax the Motorhome. When France opens up what problems will I have returning to the UK?

I don't know what the law is in France, but I'm fairly sure if you've booked a MOT at the nearest garage in the UK on return you will be ok.

Edit: That's terribly worded, what I mean is, if you get into Dover book a MOT in Dover, don't think you would ok driving it to Newcastle for example.

Firstly the MOT, the UK authorities are not concerned about no MOT outside the UK, as long as when one arrives on UK soil one drives straight to a pre-booked MOT test.

If the vehicle is not currently taxed you may find that there is already a fine waiting for you in UK.

If you have SORNed it while in storage in France you might have got away with the fact that it should have been in Great Britain(NI has different rules).

I do not know what a Gendarme would do if you were stopped. I suggest you keep to all speed limits till you reach La Manche.

Yes, but I'm fairly sure you can't drive to a MOT station hundreds of miles away from where you enter the UK?

From the UK government rules.

Probably same rules apply everywhere, in Spain a vehicle cannot be used without mot and if stopped it would be transported to a storage facility until the fine was paid and in your case a transporter to return it back to the UK. 🙄 Bob.

Strictly speaking driving it in France is illegal. It should be returned to UK on a transporter. If your in an accident it’s likely your insurance is invalid. If your stopped you will likely have your vehicle impounded & face a fine. So it all depends on the risk your prepared to take. As others have stated it needs booked into a UK MOT testing garage for the day you plan to arrive back in the UK to be legal on UK roads. It’s difficult as the situation is not of your making although the vehicle could have been bought back before Christmas but none of us knew this was going to go on so long. I feel for you, hope you get it sorted.

If it was me I would get a quote to have it shipped, I would have a medic on standby for when I read the quote, but whatever the cost it will be less than risking the MOHO being impounded in France.
As others have said, it depends on your attitude to risk.
Whatever you decide, good luck.

i would have thought being stopped in france, whilst in a motorhome might be a bit more of a frequent occurrence, until such times as there are a lot more UK motorhomes on the roads in France ............

certainly not advising or suggesting you break the law ..............

But don't you have to go into quarantine when arriving in UK from France? Sorry if I'm wrong but can't keep up with all the to-ing and fro-ing, especially as France is now insisting UK residents go into quarantine on arrival in France from June 8th(?). So how do you get it tested and, presumably, taxed?

Can't offer any solutions, sorry. Maybe someone can meet you and sort the van out for you?

Add to this the required quarantine period for the driver on UK arrival. I think the transporter would be best.

If you do decide to go down the transported route, I think you'll only need to get it delivered to the French docks, as you're able to drive it in UK if you've an appointment to get it tested. If you do need to go into quarantine, do you have any friends or relatives who can take it to be tested? Any Funsters in Dover?

As I understand it there is no maximum distance you can drive a vehicle without an MOT to a testing station, only that it must be done on that day, you must drive direct and it must be booked in.

The law states that a vehicle must comply with the road traffic act of the country it is registered in.the UK allows you to drive it to a precooked mot appointment. There is no stipulation as to the location of the testing center. I would book an mot at whichever garage you choose and get the to email you a conformation of the appointment

Yes, after having a look this is correct.

As far as I know - VED - driving to an MOT appointment is allowed, regardless of distance, insurance will be valid if the vehicle is roadworthy.
