Has anyone taken their bird to France lately? I've just emailed a local vets but wondered if anyone else has taken their birds away lately and what it entails, thanks

It's definitely possible the other way. My mum and dad were at a site in Bath this week and the German couple opposite had two dogs and a parrot.

Vets have replied. Birds aren't eligible for an animal health certificate and as far as they know there are no vaccinations required. He then goes on to say I may need an animal export certificate but it may not cover what I'm looking for.

I don't think it will either, we aren't exporting ourselves, just going on holiday, the defra website just talks about animals and flocks of farm birds šŸ¤”

When you think about it, you could just chuck a bird in the air and it could fly to France so they can't really stop you.
What about all the swallows and cuckoo's that do it twice a year.

My understanding is the AHC is so long and messy is because it's basically a lightly modified livestock export certificate.

We have previously taken an African Grey through the tunnel both ways and via ferry to Amsterdam.

No paperwork required or asked for. Although DFDS did charge .

Canā€™t remember exactly where, but in France a couple of weeks ago we passed a cyclist with a parrot on her shoulder. It was in some kind of harness to stop it flying away. The things you see šŸ˜‚

My friend looked into taking her budgie to Spain over this last winter and it was nigh on impossible. The bird need a leg ring or chipped and DEFRA insist on an animal export form being completed. ALL the local vets had zero idea and the nearest avian specialist was insisting on the microchip

Forgot to mention every vet we talked to mentioned avian flu and the likelihood of the bird being euthanised if there was an outbreak where she was going and a prohibition on movement being enforced

That's a good point. An outbreak of avian flu could cast a broad net and a set of very generic rules that'd make movement of a bird legally very risky. It might be counted as livestock rather than a pet.

There have been no outbreaks in the UK since November 2022 and in mainland Europe the cases are substantially lower than previous years, they think due to natural immunity in flocks. Which is great news because it means that particular strain won't be back šŸ‘Œ

I can't find much at all online about pet birds, all the info talks about farm flocks. The risk of an indoor pet bird, getting bird flu, or spreading it must be miniscule

Your bird does not need to catch it. If there is an outbreak it will become illegal to transport any bird across borders, and rightly so
