They're required for Spain and Italy if you have anything protruding from the rear of your vehicle.

The one on the picture is for Italy. Spain has 3 red stripes.

Some are double sided.

I have a composite double sided one from Norauto coating €25. Apparently it's legal for Italy but all the info I've read suggests that mental ones are required for Italy. Composite/ plastic don't scratch bikes etc as much as metal ones.

Some folk will say theyv never been stooped by the police for not having one. Some folk will report they've been fined €80 for not having them displayed.

The Italian one is also valid for Spain so you only need the one, I got the ally one and stuck some thin ply on the back.

As above, you need them for Italy (3 stripes) and Spain (5 stripes) for anything extending beyond the rear of your vehicle

Most boards available in the shops are double sided and made of plastic

I have not heard of any recent stoppages of people displaying a board made of the wrong materiel or displaying the Italian board in Spain, or the Spanish one in Italy.

Most bike covers have a clear plastic pocket to fit the board.

They also need to be the right way around, bottom corner pointing towards the kerb (I think)

the requirement for spain was always metal but they do not seem to enforce it much.Problem with continued use of the plasticy type is degradation & wind damage when used for over length loads.
Additionally in spain if whatever you have on the rear extends to both sides of the vehicle then two(2) V 20 signs are required ,at each extremity, one pointing to the centre of the road & the other to the kerb.

Cuando la carga sobresalga longitudinalmente por toda la anchura de la parte posterior del vehículo, se colocarán transversalmente dos paneles de señalización, cada uno en un extremo de la carga o de la anchura del material que sobresalga.

When the load protrudes longitudinally throughout the width of the rear of the vehicle, two signalling panels shall be placed transversely, each at one end of the load or the width of the material protruding.

so if you have a box or bikes which extend to each side then 2 boards are needed.
