2009 Autotrail Dakota
We have a 2009 Autotrail Dakota. The original carpet was stuck down prior to the fittings being installed and now we want to replace the carpet as it's worn out.
Plan is to cut out the old carpet around all the fittings, get a vinyl or hard floor laid and have some removalable carpets made to use as well.
A. Has anyone else done this?
B. Recommendations of suppliers/installers in the UK. (we don't mind travelling to get the right people)
I don't have the time (or patience & skill) to get a decent finish 😁
Cheers

We did this on a static caravan, and as you said the walls and furniture are installed after the carpets ... We fitted vinyl planking (tongue and groove) which worked really well. We also bought some uPVC skirting to cover the junction of carpet and walls, which finished it off perfectly

There is a company called Premier Products in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire who make bespoke, custom made carpets and mats for the automotive and leisure industry, and often have stock templates to use for many vehicles, including Motorhomes.
They made me a custom cab carpet with rubber foot plate on the drivers side and with matching blue contrast trim edging to a black carpet.
They are very good and very helpful and even make rubber chequer plate type carpeting and flooring.
If you have the design template or the measurements you need they will also work to those.
Cab mat for fiat ducato 2001, with foot plate , in black, and bespoke contrast edge trim in van matching blue for £28 inc vat.
They are local to me so I collected, but they offer a delivery and also a design service.
Look up premierproductsltd.co.uk and give them a ring.
They are very competent and I suspect they are the ones making many “ off the shelf” cab mats as sold on eBay etc and shows by many of the accessory suppliers.
I can recommend them!
Worth a look 👍

Here’s another idea.
When you have removed the carpet as fitted, and I assume that underneath is just the bare wood floor, why not fit self adhesive vinyl wood effect tiles.
Easy to cut and lay.
Then have your carpet pieces made which you can remove as and when needed.
Our fiat ducato coach built came with a base linoleum wood effect floor as standard and we have laid a carpet ourselves from a template I made out of cardboard in 3 sections, then joined them together and cut around to cut out the carpet.
I am thinking now though of taking up my home made carpet and getting premier to make me 3 “mats” to overlay the linoleum wood effect floor, to the size of the 3 templates I made.
Our van is 21 years old this year and in those days, did not come with a carpeted floor, just linoleum, which is a bit cold on your feet, but dead easy to clean!

Just watch the weight of any flooring you put down doesn't impact your payload!

Is vinyl planking the same as vinyl tiles but in longer lengths? Who did you pruchase it from?
Can the vinyl tiles/planks be butted up to the units as there is such a narrow width of it, or do you need to allow for expansion as with laminate?

I need to replace my 2003 AT carpets too. Do you happen to know how thick the carpet is where the units rest on it, as this would be left after cutting up to the unit? Or does the Lino / laminate cover the remaining carpet?

Would love to know.

How much of a gap did you levae between the vinyl planking and the walls/units?

I put down some temporary laminate planks in the summer, and when I came to lift them up recently in the cold weather, I noticed that they were fitting more tightly than when laid - so I guess the motorhome body shrinks in the winter more than the flooring does!

i went pretty close to the walls and units, but not so much that they were very tight, left a little bit for expansion and the gap was covered by the upvc skirting i fixed to the walls

Just giving this a bump. Hope that’s ok. Following closely as I may have to replace the carpets (“have to” as in “told to”!)

It was basically a uPVC moulding 75mm X 3mm, with a half round edge at the top.
I will add a photo tomorrow as we are in France now and the caravan I fitted it in is only next door.

We did something similar but used sticky planking (non tongue and groove) and just a small skirting in the caravan. It was a very reasonable cost effective job with nice finish

suavecarve I’m keen to do something similar. I assume you lifted the carpet up to the fitted units? Was there much of a height differential to hide?

Carpet completely removed. Has to be flat. If I remember rightly (20+years ago) I got 10mm pine quadrant for the skirting. I dont think it was the height difference between the carpet and the cupboards I was trying to hide but my cutting it to shape ! so 10 mm covered all the wifes measuring errors

Nothing fancy. It isn't a skirting board (which you could buy)

Just pulled it back a bit. It's only stuck on with silicone with a few 'dabs' along its length. As caravans tend to flex I thought it was the simplest method of securing, but I prob overthought it

Looking at the skirting it's prob only 50mm X 5mm

Hope that helps?

It's the laminate that expands in winter as it retains moisture and contracts in the summer when the moisture is evaporated.
