We’ve heard from the Deputy Prime Minister that we can expect power cuts this winter. As part of our preparation for such eventuality (we only have an electric hob and oven) I have dug out our old gas camping stove and a nearly full 2.750kg gas bottle for use in the house.

Trouble is, the regulator and tubing is over thirty years old so want to replace both tubing and regulator. I can’t find reference to a 2.750kg gas bottle and some suppliers of regulators list the sizes of gas bottle that fit the regulator. I’ve measured the outer diameter of the gas bottle connection which is approx 24.77mm and the internal diameter which is approx14.89mm. So I guess the actual diameters are 25mm OD and 15mm ID. I’ve also attached photos of the old regulator which just pushes onto the tubing.

I should be grateful if someone could advise me about buying:
(a) a suitable replacement regulator
(b) suitable tubing
(c) whether I’ll be able to get the 2.750 gas bottle exchanged or refilled given that I don’t see that size bottle listed anywhere.
Thanks very much.

If you have a farm supply outlet near you they should stock hose.
I would try the regulator before trying to, probably unsuccessfully, replace it.
Just try it out doors first.

Halfords sell them with a small lenght of pipe for £10
I’ll get round to Halfords if pappajohn ’s suggestion isn’t successful (and I’m not in the Burns Unit at YDH or alternatively in orbit🙂).

I also note that Halfords also stock (I use the term loosely as it’s not available till next Tuesday) the small gas bottle.

You could always 'borrow' a cylinder from the van. It would need a separate regulator.

As it happens, we have two cylinders from the van that I removed when we had the Alugas refillable fitted by Autogas 2000. One’s a 13kg the other’s a 6kg. Both are about one thrid full still. I have the original pigtails but would need a suitable regulator. Any suggestions?
I would be useful, if push comes to shove, to be able to cook using these larger bottles.

I take the ones from the van are propane (red bottle) for the old stove you will need a 37mb propane regulator.
I hope you are aware you are not allowed to use propane cylinders inside a house.

I wasn't aware of that. Butane's OK, but Propane not? I wonder why?

Yes, they are propane bottles. Yes, I was aware that there is a prohibition on using propane indoors. Same as in France. There we have an almost full 13kg Spanish bottle and a completely full 13kg French Propane bottle. All are kept safely in the stable. When we get back there, in our next 90 in 180 day period, I’ll try and find someone local who wants them.

GoOutdoors we went to a month ago had pigtails and regulators for all the above mentioned types (camping gaz, propane/butane bottle connections). Wasn't badly priced either for these.

Thank you everyone who posted. As usual, great, helpful advice. 👏👏👍
