Hi

We're starting to look into replacing and extending our tarmac driveway to create more room to park 2 cars and our motorhome.

Currently a 3.3T PVC but likely to change at some point to a bigger motorhome, possibly 4T+.

Wondered if tarmac might be an option, although not sure about the ability to support the weight.

Don't think gravel or grass pavers/grids are practical options due to the downward slope of driveway in 2 planes towards our house

Going to be getting quotes in the coming weeks.

I understand every property/landscape situation is different, however would appreciate some insight into the types of things you've considered and aspects we should be thinking through?

Thanks
Brocola

We had our front block-paved for our car and ‘van but, as Mikeco says, it’s the base that’s important, so ensure that any contractor knows EXCACTLY what you’ll use it for….. (y)

With tarmac and other non ports pavings to front of house, you may need planning consent. These surfaces can have issues where there may be surface water drainage issues contributing to flood risks.

From experience with a sloping block paved driveway, I'd say that after 8 years it's possible to tell where the weight of my campervan sits. Block paving is often laid on poor bases (mine was done before I moved here, so I've no idea what's under it, but I know that it's not the best job). For a heavier vehicle you'll need blocks laid on concrete bases, not sand. Ask some penetrating questions about the specifics of the way anyone quoting will lay the blocks.
So far as tarmac goes, the little car park area across the road from me was resurfaced about 3 months ago, and it has already had to be re-done because the two minibuses on it, and other smaller vehicles, had damaged the surface. So again, ask any contractor hard questions, and ideally go to see some of their work before agreeing anything. Local FB groups are useful for asking about contractors and their work.

As other's have said, it's the base that counts, a good base will carry any top surface medium, blocks, tarmac, gravel.
We went for a porous decorative chipping finish as ours equally slopes two ways towards the house so absorbs a lot of the rainwater falling on it. You need remember, the vans footprint is a non absorbing area.

Thank you for all the comments, much appreciated. Will start exploring with potential suppliers to understand options.

We‘ve just given our motorhome a new driveway. We went for tar, for looks and longevity. The installers did a lot of groundworks first and we are very happy with the result. Expensive though!
