Rapido 803F
We have a 2016 Rapido 803F which has a REMIS roof light over the main sitting area. After recent trip away it became obvious that all was not well with the REMIS unit, eventually, it was closed and left, until we got home.

On examination it has transpired that one of the two arms which elevate, and close, the roof light, has broken. The part it not apparently available from REMIS, who are wiling to sell a complete operating mechanism at a price of about £200.00. All that is needed is an arm, with a hole at one end, and a peg at the other.

I have made one replacement, but the material I used was not up to the job, I was not surprised frankly.

Does anybody out there have any good contacts for REMIS parts; the repair I need to do takes about 10 minutes and is not rocket science, but without the correct part, may take several attempts.

Alternatively, does anyone know (have) a dead REMIS 400x700 roof light which may be available for a moderate sum?

On examination, ours had obviously been 'got at' before; odd screws laying in the bottom frame, odd rollers in the bottom frame too, not good. However, I have worked out where everything goes, but just need some parts.

Take care.

Roger.

I have a big Remis roof vent in my loft. Wind up version with two metal rods going between base and the dome. Think I may also have other spare parts for it. A picture of what you want would help.

Good morning, thanks for your reply, at last something positive.
I am charging my camera, after that, anything might happen. You say the roof light you have has 'two metal bars ' that go up to the lifting hatch, that may be the problem; ours has two plastic arms, one of which has broken, unsurprisingly. The arm I am looking for is 245mm between the centre of the hole at the top end, and the centre of the 'peg' on the bottom end. I know there are different lengths of arm, we did get hold of a rod from a 400 x 400 roof light, but it was considerably shorter.
I will try and manage a photograph, but my laptop which has the camera programme on it is away being fixed, this computer does not talk to the camera and vice versa.

Regards.

Roger

Leisure shop direct do the Remis Vario 2 lifting mechanism for a 700 x 500 rooflight for about £70.00 if that helps? I've just fitted one & comes with all you need. Not the rooflight itself though.

Have you got a picture of the broken arm.
Here are 3 photos of the broken arm. Break is obvious. Can you help?

If you send me the broken part, I will endeavour to make a stronger replacement. Will send you a PM with my address. I will probably be coming back to you for more pictures of where it fits so I can make the weak areas thicker and stronger. These improvements in design need to be mindful of not having an adverse affect on its fitting.

Thanks, that will be great. When we establish personal contact we can probably talk on the phone, there is a problem with the original whereby the thinest bit of plastic cannot withstand the loadings on it if there is any shock on the dome of the rooflight, and snaps off, as has happened with ours.

Paul, would it be feasible to print in a metal washer to strengthen the broken area?
Either built in or leave a slot then glue in the washer?

Yes. That was one of my Ideas to try. I would need lots of pictures to get an idea of how it fits into place and what room I have to work with for redesigning. 👍

Roger, could you just glue a metal or plastic washer onto the broken part? If you used super glue and baking powder it should 'hold' - however if the stud or fastening it fits to is plastic then a metal washer may damage it/wear it away.

Failing that you could try using super glue and baking powder to fabricate the missing piece and attach it using the same 'stuff' !

The broken end of the strut is only 1.94mm thick, and so has very little intrinsic strength. The slot in the pivot block, into which the broken end fits, is 1.91mm, so it is all a bit tight, and lacking in strength. A design F.U. if ever there was one.
If I send the broken strut, and the pivot block, the two parts can be looked at as a whole, rather than in isolation. I am perfectly certain I can enlarge the slot in the block without too much trouble, but even with baking powder I doubt superglue is going to be adequate.

I am looking forward to a phone call.

Finally, after a lot of faffing about on my part, I have arrived at a conclusion which I can share.
I 'obtained' two strips of aluminium, slightly thicker than the original arms, these were shaped carefully t match the original. Holes were drilled to match the originals, the material ground down to the correct thickness to fit. The end which has a hooklike section in it I cut to suit, and then slowly (very slowly) heated it to the point at which it became more malleable , and then very carefully bent it to fit. I had only broken arm, but made a second one to ensure that I didn't end up in the same position again.
Both arms are now fitted, and working satisfactorily.

Thank you to all those who offered helpful suggestions, the general consensus was that 3D printing might not have been strong enough.
